One of the most popular features of my blog Dog Show Poop is my list of Dogs2Watch, dogs that I think will be among the top-ranked dogs in the near future. There are no hard and fast criteria for the list. I like to recognize a dog that has had won at least one BIS, but not always. I deemed the Smooth Fox Terrier, GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, a Dog2Watch after he bested the Sealyham Terrier, CH Efbe’s Hidalgo At Goodspice, in three out of four meetings in Brooksville FL in January of 2009. I also consider the people behind the dog. If the breeders, owners and/or handler have produced multiple top dogs, I will always be looking for the next dog they put in the ring. However, many of the dogs on the list are bred, owned and/or handled by people whose names are only now familiar because the dog has been winning. I do edit the list from time to time, removing dogs that have retired. I do not remove a dog because it doesn’t meet my expectations. Happily, more than 90 percent of my predictions have come true. Here are the dogs I have added to the list in the last few months.
The Smooth Fox Terrier, CH Absolutely Talk of the Town, first came to our attention in March this year, when the then 16-month-old bitch grabbed an RBIS and a BIS against formidable competition in Hanford CA. Taylor, the daughter of GCH CH Slyfox Sneaks A Peek, the 2011 and 2013 winner of the Westminster Kennel Club Terrier Groups, was bred and is owned by James W Smith, AKC’s 2012 Breeder of the Year, and handled by Eddie Boyes, who also piloted Taylor’s father, Adam. Taylor spent Memorial Day weekend collecting three consecutive BIS to bring her 2013 resume to six BIS and 13 Terrier Groups.
The first time the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Exlysta Aries Ciel Noir, appeared in the final ring he exited with the Reserve award in hand. That was back in December. Ryder and owner/handler Phil Schafmayer would visit the final ring six more times before picking up back2back BIS out on Long Island (NY) in May. Ryder would follow with a BIS in Wrightstown PA on the first weekend of this month and another the following weekend in Yorktown Heights NY, bringing his 2013 record to four BIS and 12 Hound Groups. Ryder was bred by Perry Rooks & Christine Anderson-Smith, who co-own with Phil Sharon Ferraro.
Our most recent Dog2Watch is the Skye Terrier, GCH CH Cragsmoor Goodtime Charlie. He is backed by the same team that brought us the winningest Skye Terrier in AKC history, GCH CH Cragsmoor Buddy Goodman. They are breeders/owners Eugene Zaphiris & Matthew Stander, owner Victor Malzoni Jr. and handler Larry Cornelius. Charlie just began his specials career in late April, but has already had four BIS and one RBIS in just six final appearances. It could be a really interesting second half of the year.
I hope you get out to see these and the rest of my Dogs2Watch. Maybe you will find a Dog2Watch of your own. And that’s today’s Back Story.
