Ernest Hemingway with his dog, named "Black Dog"

Is It the Journey or the Destination?

When I was young, I wanted to travel and see the world. Today I have the free time and disposable income to pursue that youthful desire. The problem is that though I still want to see the world, especially if there’s a dog show there, I don’t much like traveling. Let’s start with the whole… read more

Top Three Status Quo

My Monday Morning Mop Up this week follows familiar ground. Six of the 21 all-breed shows in the lower 48 this week were won by four of our Top Ten Dogs All Breeds, eight more were won by dogs ranked in the Top 100, and seven were won by dogs not yet in the Top… read more

Today's Top Twenty

Now that I am home from Houston and basking in the afterglow of the Reliant World Series of Dogs, I have set about updating Dog Show Poop’s show reports and rankings. Here’s where the sport stands today, not as of the end of May, or the end of June, but as of today at 8:00… read more

Getting There Is Half the Fun

I look forward to traveling to the different regions of the United States to attend each area’s marquee shows and talking with the local breeders and seeing the country’s top dogs. Let me amend that. I enjoy attending these shows. I hate traveling to them. My recent trip to Houston for the Reliant Series of… read more

Quality Not Quantity

We had far fewer shows this week than last, just 17 all-breed shows in six locations. Last week there were 43 all breeds in 15 venues. The fewer shows meant larger entries and more of our top-ranked dogs in the same show hall.  If you’ve been following Best In Show Daily and my blog, Dog… read more

Here in Houston: Day Three

It’s the final day of the Reliant Series of Dog Shows here in Houston, and none of the excitement has waned. Everyone is wondering whether we will see another head-to-head match between our Top Two Dogs All Breeds at today’s Galveston County Kennel Club show. I say don’t bet the lunch money. There are plenty… read more

Here in Houston: Day Two

The Beaumont Kènnel Club is hosting day two of the all-breed shows here in Houston at the Reliant Series of Dog Shows. The BKC is the largest of the three all-breed shows with over 2,500 dogs in the regular classes. Top-ranked dogs continue to appear. Many of them had competed at other all breed shows… read more

Ringside in Houston

Here in Houston: Day One

I entered the Reliant Center, which is adjacent to Houston’s most recognizable landmark, the Astrodome, now know as the Reliant Astrodome, a bit groggy after my midnight arrival, thanks to modern American air travel (but that’s another story). Nonetheless, the moment I stepped inside the show hall, I immediately felt the electricity of one the… read more

Who Are the BIS Winners?

I have been struck these past several weeks by how many new faces I am seeing collecting BIS wins here at midyear. Being the numbers nerd I am, I am always suspicious about hunches, gut reactions and anecdotal evidence. So I decided to look at the numbers to see what they tell us. Above is… read more

A Tail of Two Cities

Our show season continues to be a tail of two cities, the expected one, occupied by our Top Ten Dogs All Breeds and the surprising one, populated by eager hopefuls. Eight of our Top Ten scored top awards this week. Two, the Number Three Dog, the Miniature Pinscher, Marlex Classic Red Glare, and the Number… read more
