The first weekend of the show season is in the record books, and the standout performer was clearly the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH AfterAll Painting the Sky. The AKC/Eukanuba National Champion swept all four appearances this week in Indio CA, taking the top prizes at the two limited-breed shows offered by the Desert Empire Terrier Club Of Southern California and the two huge Kennel Club of Palm Springs shows. The wins will bring Sky nearly 6,000 points and a substantial lead on the field.
Some 4,000 points behind are last year’s Number Two Dog All Breeds, the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, who collected two Sporting Groups and a BIS in St. Paul MN and the Bearded Collie, GCH CH Spirit Woods Gandalph the Blue, son of the winningest Bearded Collie of all time, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins. In the same neighborhood are two dogs who each took a BIS in Glen Rose TX, splitting the two Nolan River Kennel Club’s shows, the Australian Shepherd, GCH CH Harmony Hill Money Talks, and the Bichon Frise, GCH CH Saks Winning Card. In Tallmadge OH, the 2012 Number Three Dog, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol Veni Vidi Vici, picked up three Working Groups and a BIS, assuring a Top Ten berth this week.
Four dogs will likely make our first Top Ten on the strength of group wins in Palm Springs this week, three Hounds, the Harrier, GCH CH Downhome Hitech Innovator, the Bloodhound, GCH CH Quiet Creeks Kiss and Tell, and the 13-inch Beagle, GCH CH Bougain’e Naughty-N-Lovely Alvin, and the Japanese Chin, GCH CH Victory Spencer.
The next two weeks will again feature large West Coast entries, 6,200 in Puyallup WA next week, and 10,000 points in Portland OR the following week. All eyes will be on the Wire Fox, Sky, to see if she can hold onto her lead. Dog Show Poop and Best In Show Daily will be the first to let you know. And that’s today’s Back Story.
