2012’s Final Top Ten

It will be another two weeks before AKC announces the official end of year statistics, but I have a sneak preview for you now. Before I get into the details, I have a couple of provisos. These numbers are based, in part, on estimated absentee numbers, and do not include specialty numbers after November 30. While my mathematical model has been accurate within 0.5 percent of the actuals over the last five seasons, some of our races are within that margin of error. In the end, the statistics below are for your entertainment.

The race for Number One Dog All Breeds literally came down to the Wire, with the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, holding off a final push by the Number Two Dog, the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, ending the year with about a 2,300-point edge.

The rest of the Top Ten finished more than 28,000 behind the leaders. The Number Three Dog, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, faced a furious attempt by the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH AfterAll Painting the Sky, to overtake her. However, the Doberman, FiFi, would play her trump card and use her off day in Orlando to go to Cleveland and collect a 1,900-point BIS in Cleveland, good enough to hold off the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba Championship (ANEC) winner.

The last week of the year also pitted the Number Five Dog, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, and the Number Six Dog, the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, in a final week match for the title of Number One Toy Dog. The Affenpinscher, Joey, would take three of four meetings, with the Min Pin, Classie, retaining his status as Number One Toy.

While the Kuvasz, GCH CH Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver Six Pence, remained secure in his Number Seven Dog spot, the rest of the Top Ten played a fierce game of musical chairs. The Top Two Hounds took full advantage of the big numbers in Orlando and options in Cleveland and Allentown PA. When the dust settled, the American Foxhound had collected two BIS in two different venues and moved past the 2011 AENC winner, the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, into the Number Eight spot.

Similarly, the Number Two Hound, the Harrier, GCH CH Downhome Hitech Innovator, had a very good week, winning two of the Cleveland shows. The two wins, plus three BIS earlier this month, were good enough to Move Chet into the Top Ten, displacing the Boxer, GCH CH R and G’s Mystical Dancer. It is ironic that the Harrier’s gaining the Number Ten spot would deny the Springer, Peyton, the Number One spot. I hope you followed my advice not to bet your lunch money.

Some of our Top Ten Dogs will return next year for a second go ’round, but others will retire to the good life. I hope you got a chance to see them all. I did, and I’m richer for it. Make your plans to see the best purebred dogs in the world at an AKC show in 2013, and let me know which ones you think I should be watching. And that’s today’s Back Story.
