The Jacksonville Dog Fanciers Association shows in Ocala, Florida won’t be something one set of sisters will forget for a very, very long time. I thought that the dog fancy should share in that weekend with them.
Michelle Bryant and Sandy Carter are sisters and breed Staffordshire Bull Terriers in Florida. I was judging the terrier breeds and Terrier Group on Saturday in late September. I had a nice entry of 11 Staffords, 4 of them specials. I gave winners to a beautiful Stafford bitch, Seenworstaff Lucky Me, and in judging the Best of Breed class, decided that she was so outstanding that I would award her Best of Breed. My Best of Opposite Sex was a beautiful male who looked very much like her.
While taking the pictures, the exhibitor informed me that the bitch was an import from the UK and that her breeders would be thrilled. Evidently she has a sibling there that is doing very well, too. The bitch was imported to breed to the male I had given BOS.
In judging the Terrier Group that day, she was the obvious choice to win the Group in a nice entry of terriers. The sisters were incredibly excited, but not as much as when judge Honey Glendinning awarded her Best in Show!
Now this is great story by itself, but there’s more…
I was judging only on Saturday, so was curious how this bitch had fared on Sunday under David Alexander, himself a bull breed person, so I called up David on Tuesday to see what had happened. David also liked the bitch and gave her winners, but felt their dog, GCh Shortyrocks Jasper by Dumbriton, was better so gave him Best of Breed and the bitch Best of Opposite Sex. But wait, there’s more…
David gave the male the Terrier Group and his wife, Carolyn awarded him Best in Show!
So, in two shows they put two Best in Shows on two different dogs. Has a breeder/owner ever had a better weekend?
