Anticipation

Today begins my daily visit with you all here on Best In Show Daily. I hope to bring you a little closer to the world of AKC dog shows and all the Back Stories from one of the greatest hobbies around.

I can’t remember when I have looked forward to the new year with such anticipation. In this coming year, I will see my daughter married, my newest grandchild baptized, and attend my first Kennel Club of Palm Springs Show in 20 years. I and my colleagues from Best In Show Daily will be at the posh Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio CA starting Thursday to introduce you all to our terrific new online magazine and to report out on all the action in and out of the rings.

While I expect to see many of our top dogs from 2011, I hope to see lots of fresh faces trying to get a head start on 2012. The entries are in and the numbers are staggering. The KCPS’ two shows on Saturday & Sunday will be preceded by several limited breed shows. The Desert Empire Terrier Club Of Southern California, the Toy Dog Breeders Association Of Southern California, & the Sand To Sea Non-Sporting Association Of Southern California will all host back2back events on Thursday & Friday, while the Inland Empire Hound Club Of Southern California will have one show on Friday. The DETCSC, TDBASC, & the SSNSASC drew 771, 831, & 687 entries respectively, and the IEHCSC posts a very impressive one day total of 638. All these numbers rival the average all breed show in 2011.

All these are just warm ups for the weekend’s main attractions, the KCPS’ two shows, With nearly 6500 entries over the two days, we will be all over the polo fields to take in as much of the action as we can. I am very excited about the opportunity to see big entries in breeds that that haven’t been seen of late. Leading the way in majestic fashion are the Rhodesian Ridgebacks, averaging 110 entries a day. In addition to the usually well represented Golden Retrievers & Doberman Pinschers, we will have around 65 Vizsla & 75 Samoyeds each day. Terrier exhibitors will be treated to four days of 400 plus Groups, Toy fanciers will be treated to Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chinese Crested, & Papillon entries in the 40 to 50 range each day, and Non-Sporting fans will see a Boston Terrie showcase leading the group with nearly 60 entries each day.

I hope you will join me here daily as I dig down a little deeper in the dog world to bring you The Back Story.
