Atopic Dermatitis Gene No Panacea, plus Breeder Liability

Senior Editor Susan Chaney provides a bit of good news in the battle to manage atopic dermatitis – in German Shepherd Dogs. Swedish researchers have isolated a region of genes that are partially responsible for a proclivity toward this skin disease that can affect a number of breeds. Discover how recent findings can be helpful, but don’t spell an end to this troubling condition in both canines and humans.

Belgium could become the first nation in Europe to hold breeders liable when a dog bites. Contributing Editor Karl Donvil suggests that such a law might impact puppy mills and the international trade of dogs in his home country, but it will surely affect responsible breeders there as well. Find out how the proper socialization of puppies may not be enough to safeguard breeders in the future.

Liability for Aggressive Dogs May Extend to Breeders

Belgium’s Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, Laurette Onkelinx, is considering extending liability to the breeder when a dog bites someone.

If successful, Belgium will be the first country to have such a law. more

Last week’s headline, “Researchers identify gene associated with eczema in dogs,” on the AlphaGalileo Foundation website, got me excited. Having researched atopic dermatitis for an article last September, I immediately imagined what this could mean for dog owners everywhere.
