Bill Shelton Podcast: Part Two and the Buzz About Pomeranians

Social media can be a great way for purebred dog fanciers to reach out to their community around the world. In the second of three podcasts with Pilar Kuhn, master breeder Bill Shelton talks about how breeders are using web-based and mobile technologies to research pedigrees, expand gene pools and become educated to the dangers of animal rights organizations. Listen in as he exalts the fancy’s commitment to research and health testing, and issues this challenge to critics of purebred dogs: “Give me the facts.”

The Pomeranian is a decidedly bred-down version of the archetypal Arctic spitz. In today’s Breeder Buzzwords, the cocky and colorful miniature is presented as a favorite companion of Royal and recluse alike. Read about the many fine qualities that have made this tiny tyrant among the most popular of all companion breeds, and discover how the best examples have no idea just how small they are.

Next Sunday, May 6, I’ll be at the Trenton Kennel Club’s all-breed show in West Windsor Township, N.J. I hope to see you there!

Breeder Buzzwords – The Pomeranian
By Dan Sayers
Breeders of purebred dogs speak a language all their own. Wherever they gather, at dog shows, seminars or in chat rooms, words and phrases are used that have very narrow definitions. Their usage makes it difficult for a novice to fully participate in the conversation, and all but impossible for the general public to follow along.

Much of the breeder’s language is derived from domesticated livestock or veterinary science. Veterans who’ve spent a lifetime perfecting their own family of purebreds use agricultural and medical terms with confidence. more
