Catch Me in Kalamazoo, Day Four

Kalamazoo Kennel Club: Sunday, May 27, 2012

10 a.m.

I started my day with a breed which I have lived with a couple of times, the Pekingese. The last one I had, back in the ’90s, I had inherited after my father-in-law died. CJ was just a pet, but he was a joy to live with, even as a senior citizen. We don’t see many Pekes at the shows these days. I think they have received a lot of negative publicity thanks to the animal rights loonies. However, Luc Boileau always draws good entries, and today he had 24. His Best Of Breed was CH Sunburst Sunshine Superman.

CH Starquest Show Me The Money

Yesterday I braved the rain to watch Dr. Anthony DiNardo’s judge 40 Newfoundlands. Today I watched him choose his best of 14 Papillons. His Best was CH Starquest Show Me The Money. As I was leaving the ring, a lady stopped me and introduced herself as Janet Hare. She told me that she had not shown dogs for about 15 years, but had been reading me on Dog Show Poop and more recently here on The Back Story. She said that she came over to the show grounds to tell me that after reading the two sites she got enthused about showing again and will soon be back in the ring with another Smooth Collie. That made my day.

5 p.m.

GCH CH J'Cobe Broxden Hampton Court Detroit Tiger

One of the things that makes this cluster great is the Best Bred by Exhibitor in Cluster competition. All of the BBE Group winners from the first four shows vie for the award. Today 19 separate dog competed for a $1,000 cash prize and some well-deserved respect from their fellow breeders. Taking home the bragging rights and the money was Phil Booth and his 11-month-old Smooth Fox Terrier,  J’Cobe Broxden Hampton Court Detroit Tiger.
