Florida Classic Park

My trip home from Palm Springs was reminiscent of the John Candy/Steve Martin film, Trains, Planes, & Automobiles, but I am now home at my computer desk and able to blog to my heart’s content.

Witt the 2012 shows of the Kennel Club of Palm Springs in the record books, the dog fancy will turn to the Florida Classic Cluster, known on Dog Show Poop as the Florida Marathon. With ten shows in eleven days, the cluster is not for the faint of heart. The Clearwater Kennel Club, the Inverness Florida Kennel Club, the Manatee Kennel Club, the Pasco Florida Kennel Club, & the Tampa Bay Kennel Club, each will host two shows, beginning Thursday, JAN 12, and will running through JAN 22, with a day off on the 17th for exhibitors to catch their breath.

The shows take place at the Florida Classic Park in Brooksville FL, a 50 acre park designed specifically for dog events. Brooksville is 50 miles north of Tampa and 100 miles east of Orlando. While remote, the site is fully equipped for 265 recreational vehicles, making the marathon something of a yearly family reunion. Last year’s’ Marathon was interrupted by lightening storms, but still catapulted several dogs into the Top Twenty Dogs All Breeds. With nearly 16,000 points up for grabs. a good performance in Brooksville can give a dog a real advantage for the rest of the year.

I look for some dogs to take advantage of the first half of the marathon and then bolt for Portland OR where the Tualatin Kennel Club and the Dog Fanciers Association Of Oregon are hosting four big all breed shows starting on JAN 19th. Others are likely to head for Fredericksburg VA where the Northern Neck Kennel Club Of Virginia , the Greater Fredericksburg Kennel Club, & the Chesapeake Kennel Club Of Maryland, will collaborate on five all breed shows. Not yet six years old, the Fredericksburg Expo Center is one of the most pleasant sites for a show. The center’s facility is equipped with every amenity and is surrounded by shopping, including several within walking distance.

Our Best In Show Daily team will be out in force again at the Westminster Kennel Club show at Madison Square Garden, February 13th & 14th. In the meantime, visit me at Dog Show Poop for a report on every all breed show and here on Best In Show Daily for the Back Story.
