Debutante Season?

GCH CH Draco Greets Dassin With FourBears

I am drawn to our sport, in part, by its reverence for tradition. I am, after all, from the South where Rhett Butler & Scarlet O’Hara are our role models. However, I was introduced to most of my dog show traditions while living in New York. One of those traditions is debuting a new dog. Now, like most of the rest of our world, this is done at various levels of our social strata. Personally, I liked to show up with our new crop of hopefuls at this week’s Pocono Mountain Kennel Club shows. It was an informal annual gathering of my fellow Maltese breeders, and we always had fun regardless of who won.

However, those autumn shows were also places to see the new specials, the ones that would dominate the shows in the coming year. Today, there are lots of ways to bring out a new dog, and, with all the social media around, owners have lots of options to get their dogs seen. Here are a few of the dogs that have caught my eye lately.

In early August, the Boxer, GCH CH Draco Greets Dassin With FourBears, picked up two BIS, a Group One & a Group Three in Marshall MI. Since then, Margee has had three Working Group wins, two of which included Reserve Bests. Margee was bred by Larry Dosier, is owned by Dr. William & Mrs. Zoila Truesdale, Joseph Vergnetti, Jorge Pinzon & Wendell Sammett, and is handled by Kimberly Pastella-Calvacca.

GCH CH Rockledge McCallen Of Meath

The Irish Terrier, CH Rockledge McCallen Of Heath, burst onto the scene Labor Day Weekend with BACK2BACK BIS at the Gold Country Kennel Club’s two shows in Grass valley CA. This past Sunday, McCallen walked away with the RBIS at the Redwood Empire Kennel Club show in Petaluma CA. McCallen was bred by Linda Honey, is owned by Linda, Douglas Rapport, Joyce Wilson & Jeanene MacDonald, and is handled by Jenny Wornall.

CH Yakee Easily Persuaded

Pekingese maven David Fitzpatrick has been taking it easy this year after capping a two-year campaign by his Peke, GCH CH PalaceGarden Malachy, with the BIS at the 2012 Westminster Kennel Club Show. However, he showed up in August at the big weekend in Harrisburg PA with his newest protégé, the Pekingese, CH Yakee Easily Persuaded, and returned home with three Toy Group Firsts and a BIS at the Harrisburg Kennel Club’s closer. Just yesterday David & Rodger were in Falmouth MA collecting the big rosette at the Cape Cod Kennel Club’s opener.

So as you visit your local shows this fall, keep an eye out for next year’s superstars. It’s always fun to say, “I saw him at his first show.” And that’s today’s Back Story.
