Does Momentum Matter?

Momentum is a factor in lots of pursuits in life. An individual baseball player can be on a batting streak or an actor can have a string of box office hits or a dog can have several consecutive weekends of BIS and Group wins. Momentum is especially important going into the media build up before the Westminster Kennel Club show.

If you have been following my show reports on Dog Show Poop, you know that several dogs are having a very good January. Two dogs started the year with back2back BIS and haven’t looked back since. The German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, has added a third BIS and collected a total of six Sporting Groups so far this year. The Whippet, GCH CH Bahama Sands, has been mentioned here before, but did you notice that she has already logged two BIS and five Hound Groups this year, including two at the huge Portland OR shows?

The most conspicuous dog on a roll is the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vid Vici, who took all four Working Groups at Portland’s all breed shows and three of the BIS. FiFi picked up her sixth Working Group of the year yesterday in Lake St Louis MO. The Kerry Blue Terrier, GCH CH Perrisblu, is currently the Number One Terrier in the US with one BIS and eight Terrier Groups including three of the four huge Palm Springs Groups. However, the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH Steele Your Heart, has been coming on Strong lately with six big, big Terrier Groups including four in Portland. The Scottish Terrier, GCH CH Lomondview Clementina, has quietly accumulated seven Terrier Groups so far this year.

GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare

I have heard it said by many who ought to know that, year after year, the Toy Group is the most competitive. I’ll leave that debate for another day, but I will mention that the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, has four all breed Bests and six Toy Groups, while the Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, capitalized on the ten show Florida Classic cluster, bringing his January tally to four BIS & nine Toy Groups.

GCH CH Jaset's Satisfaction

I have written that the Standard Poodle is the quintessential show dog. This year bears that out. The Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction, has five BIS and nine Non-Sporting Groups already this year . Another Standard Poodle, GCH CH Brighton Lakeridge Encore, has two BIS and nine Non-Sporting Groups. Finally, you might not have known that the Miniature Poodle, GCH CH Surrey Sugar Baby, has two BIS and ten Non-Sporting Groups, but you do now.

Will all this momentum sweep one of the above into the winners circle at Madison Square Garden?  Maybe..maybe not.  And that’s today’s Back Story.
