Florida Finale, Day One

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

8:00 AM

I’m here at the Orange County Convention Center for the first of the three warmups for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (AENC). Today’s offering is the Space Coast Kennel Club of Palm Bay. Because it is the only all breed show in the US today, I am expecting to see most of our top dogs. For those of you who have not been to the Orlando venue, you will have thought you died and gone to heaven. The only down side is you will have to walk there. I am sure there are larger venues somewhere in the world, I just haven’t been there. After a 15-minute walk from the parking lot, we finally made it ringside. This year’s iteration benefits from added space and features wide aisles, plenty of seats and some very smart, lower wring fencing, giving everyone a great view.

The first ring I saw coming in the door was Lawrence Stanbridge’s, where Doberman Pinschers were already under way. Topping the entry of 38 was the country’s Number Three Dog All Breeds, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici.

GCH CH Casabalnca’s Thrilling Seduction

After Dobermans, I made my way to Patricia Anne Keenan’s ring on the opposite side of the hall. You may recall I told you we might have a “Ghost From Christmas Past.” Judge Keenan’s Best of Breed was the 2011 Number One Dog All Breeds, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction. Beckham is the winningest Sporting Dog in AKC history and will certainly make Saturday evening’s judging more interesting.

10:00 AM

Barbara Dempsey Alderman had 11 Wire Fox Terriers to consider with more than one BIS winner among them. However, it was the country’s Number Four Dog All Breeds, GCH CH AfterAll Painting the Sky, taking home the Best of Breed.

Bob Hutton’s ring, with 38 Whippets was one of the bigger entries today. His Best of Breed, GCH CH Sporting Fields Bahama Sands, has been among the Top Five Hounds for the last three years, taking a Group Three at last year’s AENC.

12:00 noon

After grabbing a quick sandwich, I headed to Larry Abbot’s Pekinese ring where only three of the dog dogs entered were in competition. However, all three were specials, and all three were beautiful. The one that judge Abbot liked was the country’s Number Three Toy Dog, GCH CH Winemere’s Dusting of White at Pevyne.

GCH CH Criston’s Enchanted

I decided to stop in on Bob Hutton one more time to catch the his 38 Afghan Hounds. Among the lot were at least three multiple BIS winners including, last year’s AENC Bred By Exhibitor BIS, GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli. Today’s Best of Breed was the Florida-based BIS winner, GCH CH Criston’s Enchanted.
