Fresh Faces of 2013

January is one of the most exciting months in the dog world. Every year several dogs try to stake out territory at the early marquee venues, Palm Springs, Portland OR, and Florida. This year dogs from last year’s Top Ten have dominated the Florida Marathon and the polo fields in Palm springs. However, at Portland and some of the smaller venues, some fresh faces caught our attention.

GCH CH PaRay Preferential

In Portland, the Shetland Sheepdog, GCH CH PaRay Preferential, made a stunning debut, taking both of the Dog Fanciers Association of Oregon’s two BIS. Satoshi was bred, is owned, and handled by Sheltie specialist Tray Pittman. Tray tells me that Satoshi is the dog he has been trying to breed his whole life. Team Satoshi includes co-breeder/owner Paul Flores and owner Kim Furlong. Satoshi is Japanese for “fast learner.” That’s why he is a Dog Show Poop DOG2WATCH.

GCH CH Spirit Woods Gandalph The Blue

The Bearded Collie, GCH CH Spirit Woods Gandalph The Blue, started his year with a BIS at the Land O’Lakes Kennel Club on January 5th in St. Paul MN. Gunner is the son of the top winning Bearded Collie of all time, GCH CH Tolkien Rain Tree Mister Baggins. Gunner was bred by his owners Sheila Larsen & Jim Larsen, and is handled by Mark Bettis.

GCH CH Derby's Toast with Gusto

GCH CH Derby’s Toast with Gusto

Down in Texas, the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, GCH CH Derby’s Toast with Gusto, kicked off the new year with a BIS at the Corpus Christi Kennel Club’s day one show. He has already collected another BIS yesterday at the Baton Rouge Kennel Club show in that Louisiana town. Gus was bred by Robyn & Ken Toth & Kristin Kleeman, is owned by Sue Copeland, and handled by Scott Sommer.

GCH CH Clussexx Collaboration with Traddles

In addition to the new kids on the block, I encourage you to watch two Clumber Spaniels, GCH CH Clussexx Collaboration with Traddles, and GCH CH Nexus Total Eclipse. The former, Seymour, had a very good 2012 with seven all-breed Bests and 31 Sporting Groups. The latter, Eli, was zero for two in his final appearances. Nonetheless, Eli bested Seymour in three out of four meetings in Orlando last month. Seymour has had a super start to 2013 with a big BIS in Portland OR and eight Sporting Groups, including seven in a row over the past two weeks, good enough to make him the Number Four Dog All Breeds this week. Eli has made two appearances so far this year, collecting one BIS and one RBIS. I encourage you to check out the Clumber ring at the Westminster Kennel Club show next month, likely to be one of the few times you will see these two in the same ring together.

GCH CH Nexus Total Eclipse

I believe there will be several more fresh faces joining the fun over the next two weeks. Dog Show Poop and Best In Show Daily will be the first place you hear about them. And that’s today’s Back Story.
