Go to a National

We started Dog Show Poop doing a few show reports on the nation’s Top Ten Dogs. Since then we have evolved to the point where we provide a show report on every AKC all-breed show (OK, we do occasionally miss a show in Puerto Rico or Hawaii). More recently we have tried covering National Specialties. We started reporting on Parent Club National Specialties because we think they are the essence of who we are as dog folk.

As much publicity as we give the Westminster Kennel Club Best in Show or the AKC/Eukanuba National Champion, the focus of the dog game is on the Best of Breed. Outsiders do not understand that in a Best in Show ring, the Pekingese is not competing with the Doberman Pinscher. He is competing with an image, an image in the mind of the judge, the image of the perfect Pekingese, as the judge envisions it. All breed shows are smorgasbords of canine pulchritude. Specialties are chili cookoffs. One flavor, perfectly executed. Here are the results from a few of the more recent National Specialties.

GCH CH Fieldfines Back In Action JH

The German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America chose Phoenix, AZ, for the site of its 2012 National Specialty. Judge Suzanne Dillin chose GCH CH Fieldfines Back In Action JH as her BISS. Best of Opposite Sex went to GCH Shomberg’s Perfect Timing, and Best of Winners was Sageflyer N’ Moonlight Vintage Reserve. BOB, Ace, has been there before as he is the only GSP to win his breed’s National four times (2005, 2009, 2011 & 2012). He also holds the breed record as the youngest National winner ever, having won the 2005 National at 14 months of age. Congratulations to breeders Dom Orlandi, Dr. Claudia Orlandi & Dot Simberlund, and owners Dot & Bill Simberlund & Dorothea Hand, who piloted Ace to the win.

GCH CH Seasyde Edgehill Heart of Gold

The 2012 American Pointer Club National Specialty wrapped up Saturday, April 28, in Sacramento, CA, with breeder/judge Denys Janssen choosing GCH CH Seasyde Edgehill Heart of Gold as her Best of Breed. Her Best of Opposite Sex was CH Seasyde Berries Jubilee, and her BW was Seasyde Mona Lisa Smile. Breed winner “Gibson” is a mere 18 months old and already has one Sporting Group to his credit. Congratulations to Gibson’s breeders Helyne Medeiros (who was breeder or co-breeder of all three dogs), Sean McCarthy & Tammy McCarthy, and owners Helyne Medeiros, Jane Johnston, John Kearney & Megan Lane, who had the lead.

GCH CH Kingsbury I’m Harry P

While the Pointers were in sunny California, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America, was in Huron, OH, celebrating its 2012 National. Breed winner, GCH CH Kingsbury I’m Harry P, celebrated his 12th birthday just three days before collecting the National title. Best of Opposite Sex GCH CH Aubrey’s Tails of Mystery is the current Number One Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Best of Winners went to the Winners Bitch Mandylay’s Mae West. Congratulations to Harry’s breeder/owner Jacque Schatz.

GCH CH Nisyros Al Pachino (Photo by Derek Glas)

The Japanese Chin Club of America celebrated its centennial in Gray Summit, MO, on May Day. Sari Brewster Tietjen chose GCH CH Nisyros Al Pachino as her BISS. BOS went to Touche Songbird Marvel at Six Gems, and BW went to Chindale’s Along Came Polly. Congratulations to the breed winner. Marcel’s, breeders/owners are breeder David Anderson & Ian Watt, owners Felicia M. Cashin, Jennifer Stevens & Maripi Wooldridge, and handler Jenny Wornall.

If you have never been to a National Specialty, find one near you, look for the oldest person sitting ringside, and ask them how today’s dogs compare to those of the past few decades. I promise you will learn a bunch. And that’s today’s Back Story.

Love love love Nationals, sometimes it’s even more fun to go without a dog, but would also say … it’s not important who’s judging, it’s not all important that you win, it’s important to be seen and see, it’s history in the making.

Since moving to the mainland from my island homeland of Hawaii,I have attempted to attend as many Nationals for my breed and have been able to do so,more so as I can DRIVE cheaper than “flying ” and have tried to attend to every one since no longer an islander but a “mainlander!” Love the Nationals!!! So many dogs to see of one kind, friends that I see very infrequently and of course THE DOGS!!!
