Here at Hatboro, Day One

9:00 AM

CH Goldsands Columbus

I’m here at the Middletown Grange Fairgrounds for the day one show of the Hatboro Dog Club. It’s warm and muggy, and we’re anticipating a thunderstorm, but it doesn’t seem to have dampened the enthusiasm. It’s the first all-breed warmup before Sunday’s Montgomery County Kennel Club show, and everywhere you look there are Terriers. We are going to start at Mary Jane Carberry’s ring to watch the most recent Terrier to be admitted to the AKC registry, the Russell Terrier. Her 16 entries included three specials, including the only Russell to win an AKC all-breed show, CH Goldsands Columbus. And it was the multi-BIS winner, Bosse, who took the Best of Breed today.

10:00 AM

GCH CH Donedaire’s Emerald of Erin RN

I made it over to RC Williams ring in time to see his 15 specials, threes of which are multiple BIS winners. However, the dog that took home the Best of Breed was GCH CH Donedaire’s Emerald of Erin RN. The lovely, racy bitch was breeder/owner-handled by Peter Shaw.

11:30 AM

GCH CH Dunhill Celebration

I made my way over to Alice Inman’s ring to watch a family of specials, the younger brother, the son & the daughter of the winningest Bearded Collie in history, GCH CH Tolkien Raintree Mister Baggins. They were CH Tolkien Mister Brownlocks, CH Fantasia’s Joanna’s Gift and GCH CH Dunhill Celebration. Breed went to the daughter, the Grand Champion.

12:00 PM

Next, I indulged my passion for Sighthounds at  Steven Kass’ ring, taking in Borzois, Salukis and Afghan Hounds. The three breed winners were all dogs I had written about on Dog Show Poop, but had not yet had a chance to see up close & personal, the Borzoi, GCH CH Raynbo Run for the Roses, the Saluki, GCH CH Quanmarra Thonolan & the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Criston’s Enchanted. All three impressed. The Borzoi had impressive size and movement. The Saluki, a striking white dog, was in excellent condition and beautifully presented. The Afghan Hound bitch was wonderfully refined and covering the ring easily when her handled slipped on the wet grass and fell. The Saluki would go on to win the Hound Group, while the Borzoi and the Afghan Hound breed winner, GCH CH Exlysta Reflects the Sky, watched.

That’s today’s breed report. Look for a BIS show report on Dog Show Poop and Group Placements on the Best In Show Daily Facebook page.

Peter Shaw was not handling the Irish Terrier, it was Robert Milano.
