Here at Hatboro, Day Two

Friday, October 5, 2012

We’re back here in Wrightstown PA for the second day with the Hatboro Dog Club. If yesterday was any indicator, I will be prepared for surprises. With nearly 2,000 dogs entered, from all over the world, this is definitely a show ripe with possibilities. Yesterday we saw a relative newcomer, the Saluki, GCH CH Quanmarra Tonolan, win the Hound Group while the nation’s Number One Hound failed to place. We also saw the Number One Toy Dog, the Affenpinscher, leave the Group without a ribbon.

9:00 AM

GCH CH Peremi Roll The Dyce

Today I am going to start with the Bedlington Terriers in Kerry Lee’s ring. In years past, the Bedlington Terrier exhibitors have avoided this weekend, preferring the Kentuckiana Cluster in March. I think this is a mistake. Terrier parent clubs should support this weekend as the world showcase it is. Finishing BOB was GCH CH Peremi Roll the Dyce. The frosting on the cake was his 11-month-old daughter, Peremi One Singular Sensation, who went BOS.

10:00 AM

One of the big entries here at Hatboro is the West Highland White Terriers. Finnish Judge Vesa Lehtonen had 71 of the popular white Terriers, including 28 specials. Before I go further, an aside…having shown a couple of breeds with white coats, I am sympathetic to the care required to keep those coats white. I am no fan of chalk or powder as a covering agent. They dull the coat & ruin the texture. I am surprised at the number of white dogs, not just Westies, I see with yellowed & stained coats…beards, eyes, skirts. If you elect to show these breeds, please keep them white.   Today’s breed winner met that criterion as well as the standard, GCH CH Skyehigh’s MKC Bonaparte.

1:00 PM

I adjourned to Kathleen Steen’s Doberman Pinscher ring to see if the Number One Working Dog, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, showed up. She didn’t. However, the very handsome breed winner, GCH CH Sharjets Starr Catcher CD RN, will represent the breed quite well this afternoon.

1:30 PM

GCH CH Grandgables The Frat Boy

I’m now at Meredith Johnson Snyder’s ring to see two Shetland Sheepdogs I have heard lots about, GCH CH Grandgables The Frat Boy and GCH CH Jesstar Nirvana. Today it was The Frat Boy advancing.
