Here in Houston: Day Three

It’s the final day of the Reliant Series of Dog Shows here in Houston, and none of the excitement has waned. Everyone is wondering whether we will see another head-to-head match between our Top Two Dogs All Breeds at today’s Galveston County Kennel Club show. I say don’t bet the lunch money. There are plenty of spectacular dogs here to play spoilers.

Judge Christopher Jacksic’s final cut in American Staffordshire Terriers

I started my day with judge Christopher Jacksic and his 45 American Staffordshire Terriers. Every time I watch a big group of AmStaffs being judged, I am always reminded and saddened by the hateful campaign against them. When you see a large group of AmStaffs at a show being affectionate with their handlers, friendly to the gallery, and peaceful with the other dogs, you know why it is we recommend you buy from a respected AKC breeder. Good breeding makes for good pets. Today’s well-bred Best of Breed was GCH CH An Garda Deja Vu Looking At You.

Judge Toddie Clark peruses her Neapolitan Mastiff entry.

I have positioned myself in between Chuck Winslow’s ring and Toddie Clark’s ring the better to take in judge Winslow’s Toy assignments (currently 12 Brussels Griffons) and judge Clark’s Working dogs (currently seven Neapolitan Mastiffs). Today’s Best Brussels Griffon was the same as the prior two days, CH Hilltop’s Watch Me Now. The Best Neapolitan Mastiff was also the repeating CH Otella Bruto.

Judge Clark also had 11 Saint Bernards, a real rarity these days. The first time I stepped into a show ring was with the family’s pet Saint. I have had a soft spot for them ever since. I can readily appreciate the difficulty in maintaining one of these giants, but the rewards make it worthwhile. Today’s worthy breed winner was Swisstar’s King of Hearts, a barely 2-year-old dog from the Open class.
