Hoisted on Their Own PETArd

As a self-avowed cheerleader for AKC’s conformation shows, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I am an ardent anti-animal-rights advocate. While I have tried to be restlessly optimistic on Dog Show Poop, I admit to the occasional lapse into slobbering hysterical rage whenever the subject of PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) comes up. As evil, deranged, & dangerous as I think PETA and its Hollywood liberal sycophants are, one would be foolish not to acknowledge its mastery of media manipulation.

PETA routinely grabs headlines, even when pursuing the most transparent of publicity stunts. Witness their recent failed lawsuit seeking slavery protection for Killer Whales. So imagine my delight when the press-savvy organization gets hoisted on its own petard. In news outlets as varied as the Huffington Post, the Drudge Report, & the UK’s Daily Mail, PETA has been thoroughly exposed today as the money-grubbing, self-promoting threat to pets and pet owners that it is. The normally PETA-friendly media recoiled in horror at a report by the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) that PETA kills 95 percent of the animals it takes custody of, usually within 24 hours. The Huffington Post’s Danielle Crittenden put it better than I ever could have when she wrote, “It’s a little as if discovering a pro-life group was quietly performing abortions, with the excuse that the babies were ‘inadaptable’ anyway.”

Now, many of you knew this already, but despite having an annual budget of over $37.4 million dollars (funded by people whose generosity is in direct proportion to their ignorance), PETA makes no real attempt to find homes for animals they take in. According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture, only 24 of the almost 2,000 cats & dogs in PETA’s Norfolk, VA, shelter were adopted in 2011. “PETA hasn’t slowed down its slaughterhouse operation,” CCF executive director Rick Berman said. “It appears PETA is more concerned with funding its media and advertising antics than finding suitable homes for these dogs and cats.” Contrast that with the efforts of the Nevada Humane Society & its dedicated employees and volunteers who have managed to adopt out more than 90 percent of their animals since 2007.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture is threatening to revoke the status of PETA’s Norfolk facility as a recognized animal shelter. I encourage you to visit CCF’s site exposing PETA, PETAKillsAnimals.com and then share it with everyone you know who thinks of PETA as that “funny animal rights group.” And that’s today’s Back Story.
