Juniors Keep It in the Family and Do It on Their Own

In the sport of dogs today, the majority of junior handlers come from families who are also involved in the sport. Usually someone closely related, like a mother, father or friend of the family, has already been showing dogs for a couple of years.

I wanted to reach out to some of these young handlers to find out how they got involved with dogs and, through Facebook, I heard from more than 20 different juniors.

My Favorite Things – Inspiration

One of my favorite aspects of being part of purebred dogs is remembering the people who inspired me, when I was young, to continue in the sport.
As a kid who grew up around the Terrier rings, of course there were lots of great Terrier men who were inspiring, but there was one woman that I really admired who duked it out with the “old boys’ network” in Terriers every weekend and often enough came away the victor.

Dam’s Lack of Milk Is Rare, but Likely Genetic

It’s a good thing that agalactia, the lack of milk in a dam, is a “really uncommon” condition in healthy dogs because “sadly, there’s not very much information about it,” says Margret L. Casal, D.V.M., Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia. “There’s a lot more information about it in people than there is in dogs,” she says.

Dogs in Art: Matilda Lotz at the AKC Museum of the Dog

As part of Best In Show Daily’s ongoing series highlighting artwork on display at the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, today we feature a painting by artist Matilda Lotz entitled “At the Garden Gate.” This piece was a gift to the museum from former AKC Chairman Ron Menaker and his wife, Kathy.

Matilda Lotz was the daughter of German immigrants who first settled in Franklin, Tenn., where today the Lotz House is a Civil War house museum.
