The Krew congratulates everyone that made the trek to New York City for the beloved Westminster Kennel Club and … made it home! Travel was challenging at both ends of the trip, with extended, unplanned stays for many exhibitors. We loved WKC’s innovative socmedia use–the chat room was terrific. And of course, hats off to every exhibitor, breed winner, Junior Handler, group placers and our fellow terrier, Sky, for her Best In Show. We thought we’d offer a few suggestions for recovering after the Garden or any large cluster and some ideas for changing it up for the new show season.
The Krew chooses products that are often eco-friendly, healthful and used heavily before an endorsement will be made. They are never compensated for their reviews.
Mendota Martingale Show Lead ($12.00)
Renew! Post Westminster, everyone – dogs, owners, handlers and exhibitors – needs a recharge and new leads are just the thing to refresh economically. Thick, wonderfully woven, sturdy and not easily frayed because of soft pliable Diamond Braid polypropylene rope, including an adjustable leather slide, the Mendota Martingale is light and easy to handle with, tightens when pulled and loosens immediately, great for training pups. There are 3 sizes available: small 8″ (will adjust to 12″-18″), medium 10″ (will adjust to 14″-20″) or large 12″ (will adjust to 16″-22”) and an overall length of 40″. The rings are bright brass and available in 13 colors.
At the latest Ventura cluster, I used the Mendota Braided Show Martingale large Tan Show lead (12”, 1/8 X 40”). I love the length, no need to gather it up, it simply loops over an index finger and off we went. I tried using it with my Stafford bitch, but she is a loose lead, serpentine choke-type-of- gal, and we could not get in sync using the Martingale. However, when I could not locate her lead, I looped it through her choke. It was fabulous on my beagle bitch that I was showing. It also fit both noggins!

Forever Lazy ($19.99-$54.99)
Camouflage! (we admit it, we couldn’t come up with a word that begins with “r” for this next review). It’s the next morning, your dog-tired and a little loopy. Those late night festivities and 5 AM dog walks at hotels or on-site in the RV lots are a chilling, surefire wake up. Rather than go through all the hassle of getting dressed and put together slip on a ForeverLazy. I bravely cruise the hotel lots in mine, totally incognito, hoodie up to stave off the cold – ok, it’s a 2fer, passersby are protected from my morning face and I avoid having to chat before being ready – dogs leading out in front in my boots. Deep pockets hold my phone, room key and bags. Featuring torso length zippers (up and down) on the front, and a full double zipper “drop seat” on the back, the unisex Forever Lazy is easy to slip on and off and protects you from dirty paws and slobber. Created by two guys who have a hankering for “lounging” the Lazy is perfect for those of us willing to face our fellow fanciers in this comfy, warm, adult one piece pajama. Machine washable and dryer safe. Forever Lazy is expanding their line to include solid colors, prints and now a footed version, though I haven’t tried those yet. To heck with how it looks, we’re warm and all are necessaries fit in the big pockets. Be brave – get one or two for yourself.

Smith Farms ($5.00-$26.00)
Re-energize! It’s been an exciting week for our travelers to the East Coast and back home, and now is the time to relax, recharge and refresh. Smith Farms has a wonderful collection of luxurious skin care products produced on their family farm, located in a predominately agricultural setting in Western Quebec, Canada. I love the Orange Blossom Facial Toner and have it in a spray bottle to mist before going to bed! This toner balances the skin without drying it and includes Orange blossom water with witch hazel and aloe vera. After showering, smooth on the Honeysuckle Hair and Body Oil with jojoba, sweet almond and sunflower oil, enriched with vitamin E and honeysuckle essential oil. The delicious sounding and smelling Marshmallow Face Cream hydrates and protects your face without a greasy feel. Mallow root extract softens the skin giving it a smoother, healthier feel. The Vitamin Rich Hand Cream is a grooming table must have after bathing and blowing out. Fast absorbing with healing aloe vera, chamomile flower water and vitamin E, it not only is greaseless, but unscented (which I prefer for my dog baiting hands while showing). The Lavender Goat’s Milk Soap Bar is made with only vegetable, fruit and nut oils, with a predominantly olive oil base and is a welcome addition to any shower ritual. For lips their Shea Butter lip balm, made with natural beeswax and full of antioxidant fruit, vegetable, nut oils and butters, slides on softly, protects and nourishes. I am obsessed with their Red Berry Lip Tint; it’s always in my ringside bag or non-bait pocket, containing the nourishing ingredients of their Shea Butter Lip balm, but with the addition of sheer color. The all-natural alkanet root gives this balm its rich berry hue, which leaves lips shiny, soft and with a hint of natural color.
Psst! Insider Tip: in case you didn’t know, Canada had the largest international entry this year at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show with 115 out of 127 international dogs!
