License Plates Serve As Low Cost Advertising

The choice of a vanity or personalized license plate can be a good one for many people. For my daughter and me, our personalized plates were to be rewards for when our dogs (note I said when, with great confidence, not if) earned their Champion Tracker or CT titles. So, in 2009, her Honda Element got “CT CORGI” and my minivan got “CT TERV.”

This has caused some confusion with dog fanciers who aren’t familiar with tracking. Questions such as “Why do you have ‘Connecticut Corgi’ on your car when you live in New York?” are common. Still, it does bring out the other trackers and lead to great conversations about our sport.

For my daughter, who lost her amazing Corgi in 2011, the license plate serves as a memorial to an extremely talented and wonderful little dog. Corny as it sounds, Flash lives on in that plate.

In New York, the fee for a personalized plate with eight characters (spaces count) is $60, with an annual renewal of $31.25. If you are a breeder, that plate can serve as low cost advertising. I have been stopped in parking lots by people who ask if I breed Tervs after they’ve spotted my license plate. Ours is a rare breed, and my license plate reaches out to others with Tervs, as well as people with an interest in the breed.

A dog-themed license plate on the car ahead of you is a gift when you are heading for a show in a new location and feel a bit lost. Following a van with “GLDNS 4VR” on the plate is a good bet.

The following are some plates I noted at a show this spring. Maybe you will recognize a friend’s license plate, or your own!

Mine is K9SHWGRL, helps make it (a little) easier to find a silver minivan in a sea of silver minivans at the show! Thought I get asked if I have police dogs far too often than I should…

  2. Bonnie Linnell Clarke says:

My plate has been DOBES for at least 35 years.

  3. Elaine Saxen says:

I have a Colorado van – plate is OESTAXI, & an Audi small hatchback that says OESCAB.

  4. Dianne Tyree says:

    What does ALFABCH advertise?

I LOVE these! I have more to come on other themes – performance & specialty versions. And don’t mess with Dianne! :)

Diane…It’s “ALPHA BITCH”. I saw that on a van at a show in MA and thought it was so funny. I spoke to the owner, who was loading her vehicle, and she told me that apparently the DMV couldn’t figure it out or they wouldn’t have allowed the “naughty” word.

  5. Cynthia says:

    Love it!!! Mine is SHOWFUR

  6. flywire Michele Fitzgerald says:

LOL, just talking with a friend about following other pers. tags to shows! My van is our kennel name, FLYWIRE, and my car is PICRD4U.

  7. Marilyn says:

I have Shar-Pei- all are therapy dogs. My plate is THRAPEI. I’m in AZ and was asked it that was ‘serape’ with a lisp”.

I love the Picard one & the therapy Shar Peis – how funny!
