Malamutes in the Desert

The Israeli’s Alaskan Malamutes have a new kennel club: The Israel Nordic Dog Club, a member of the Israel Kennel Club and FCI.

Israel is a small country, but the Israeli people love dogs and love to breed purebreds. Although it rarely snows and the average Winter temperatures are about 10 degrees Celsius, the Arctic breed of the massive sled dogs, the Malamute, have become very popular.  More and more Israelis are exposed to the breed through dog owners, the new Club, the dog shows, web, and facebook. They delight in discovering their unique features, their warmth and friendly natures – and fall in love with them.

The Malamute breed is not new in Israel, first starting to appear in the 90’s. Since The “Ayla Alaskan Beauty” Kennel brought in their foundation dog from Italy’s “Del Biaggio” Kennel in 2000, the breed has flourished in both quality and numbers.  The Malamute breed is not new in Israel, first starting to appear in the 90’s. Due to increasing demand for recognition and matching specific activities and sport to the breed, the Israel Kennel Club agreed, supported and “approved the separation of the breed from the Israel Dog Spitz Club and established a separate club called Israel Nordic Dogs.” Although currently the Alaskan Malamute is the only breed at the Club, the name is intended to provide room for other breeds belonging to the Northern Dogs category in the future, like the Siberian Husky and the Samoyed.

Today, only five months after its establishment, the Club has 106 members that own Malamutes and the Club is considered the biggest among the Israeli Kennel Clubs. The Israel Nordic Dog Club is sponsored by Advance, a super premium dog food company that manufactures in Spain. The company likes the Malamutes and has developed specific food for them. They sponsor many clubs around the world with grants to bags of food, and trophies to winners of the “North Star” dog shows.

The last weekend in November, during the Jewish Holiday of “Hanukah” the Club celebrated its success with the first independent club’s CAC specialty dog show. Mr. Aramis Joy Lim of Australia judged, traveling especially for our show. The show was held in the new sport hall of Hod Hasharon, with the support and encouragement of the Municipality’s Sports Department Head, Mr Isaac and the Mayor, Mr. Hai Adiv.

The show was conducted in a very pleasant atmosphere, with a lot of mutual encouragement among competitors and handlers as well – and ended with the ceremony of lighting candles, singing, blessings and eating the traditional Israeli Hanukah treat, jelly doughnuts, known as “sufganiyah”.

At the end of the show, the judge said he was very impressed by the high quality of the dogs, especially since all are now from Israeli breeding. And indeed, he gave an excellent score for all the dogs without exception and all categories were dogs that get the maximum titles.
