Meet the Breeds in Connecticut, plus Breed Standards: Long and Short

A Meet the Breeds Showcase is a fantastic way for dog clubs to send a positive message about purebred dogs to their communities. Senior Editor Christi McDonald interviews the president of the South Windsor Kennel Club, which has been holding its event for 20 years. Discover how many New England clubs participated in the most recent showcase and how many breeds showed up to encourage the public to get a dog from a responsible breeder.

The American Kennel Club has established a common format for breed standards, although not every breed’s written description complies. Some parent clubs have elected to maintain their current abbreviated standards, while others have gone to great lengths to conform to the guidelines. Find out how two standards use very different language to describe the ideal in two very different breeds.

On October 21 and 22, 2012, more than 30,000 people attended what is now the Connecticut Pet Expo, and local AKC club members and fanciers provided more than 300 dogs for the Meet the Breeds Showcase of American Kennel Club purebred dogs. more
