Montgomery County Wrap Up and Farewell to Mr. Goodman

It had been beautiful weather all weekend long, and the Montgomery County Kennel Club day was no different. Our Club is very proud of our site (Montgomery County Community College) and the hard work of the grounds chair (Ken Kauffman) and show chair (Carol Carlson) to make it as easy and pleasurable for our exhibitors as possible. Montgomery is the largest terrier show in the world and it is unique because of the support of numerous National Specialty Clubs. No where else will you find the depth of quality in so many terrier breeds. We have many foreign exhibitors who come to see the best terriers the world has to offer.

No one could write about this years Montgomery County without speaking about the passing of Walter F. Goodman – he died during the afternoon show hours and this was the first Montgomery County without Walter that any of the current members could remember. Walter was our President from 1986 to 2010. He was chosen to preside over the Best in Show ring in 2004 even though this honor is not ordinarily given to a Montgomery County Member. Walter will be remembered as a true gentlemen in all aspects of his life. The most famous Walter “story” was his trek in terrible weather to the Westminster Kennel Club Best in Show ring with his Skye Terrier, Ch. Glamoor Good News (Susie). Walter was carrying Susie on his shoulders to protect her coat from the snow covered streets. His elderly mother was following behind and someone asked why he chose to carry his dog rather than his mother. His quick wit was shown in his response: “‘I am not showing my mother.’ ” He obviously made the right choice, as he and Susie left the ring with the Best in Show ribbon. Walter’s contribution to the Sport was recognized by the dog show community as he was awarded the American Kennel Club Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. In 2012 he was inducted into the Anne Rogers Clark Hall of Fame. Donations can be made to The Walter Flato Goodman Center for Comparative Medical Genetics, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 3800 Spruce St., Philadelphia, PA 19104-6008.

“This is Patricia right after winning BJH. She is from Sweden and at the age of 17 is too old to compete in Junior Handling Competitions in her country. She was awarded BJH from the Open Senior class 2 out of the 3 days this weekend & MCKC was her last time handing as a Junior.” Quote and photo courtesy of Kayla Bertagnolli
