I love this time of year on the dog show calendar, post-Westminster. Many of the multi-BIS winners have traded in weekends on the road for romps in the backyard, chasing squirrels rather than breed records. As last year’s A-listers fade from the scene, new faces start to emerge. This past weekend gave a glimpse of things to come.
This weekend’s shows in Suffern, NY, reintroduced us to the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH D’s Remember When, a 2-year-old dog that is back in the show ring after taking a year off to mature. Jackson was a promising youngster, winning his first all-breed BIS at the age of 16 months. Jackson is under the guidance of Doberman maven, Gwen DeMilta. Backed by breeders/owners Dr. Anthony DiNardo & Sheila DiNardo and owners June & Tony Pinto, I expect Jackson will make lots of noise this year in the Working Group.
Another dog that had taken a sabbatical from the ring last year was the Wire Fox Terrier bitch, CH Afterall Painting The Sky. After finishing her championship in early 2010, Sky has only made cameo appearances in the show ring, most notably at the World Dog Show last June where she finished third in the 38,000-dog entry. On Hollywood’s favorite weekend, Sky was in Chicago giving her own breakout performance, taking both of the BIS at the prestigious International Kennel Club of Chicago. Sky is owned by Victor Malzoni, Torie Steele, Mary & Scott Olund, and Diane Ryan, and is handled by Terrier specialist Gabriel Rangel. With a team like that behind her, you can bet she will be a contender for Number One Terrier.
While a Pekingese from the East Coast has been at the top of the all-breed rankings for the last two years, another Peke, GCH CH Windemere’s Dusting Of White At Pevyne, has quietly held down a Top Ten Toy ranking with two BIS & 24 Toy Groups in 2011. Dusty has come roaring out of the gate in 2012, taking home a huge Best in Show in Portland, OR, last month and returning this past weekend to Oregon to pick up two more at Saturday’s Linn County Kennel Club show at Saturday and Sunday’s McKenzie Cascade Dog Fanciers event in Albany OR. Dusty is handled by breeder/owner Cody Koch for owners Joe & Carla Sanchez. Cody is already in the Top Twenty All Breed and will be pressing for more.
I will be in Louisville, KY, in a couple of weeks and hope to see many more of the new faces of 2012. And that’s today’s Back Story.
