Olympic and AKC Records

GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction

While watching the coverage of the Olympics this weekend, I couldn’t help but drawing comparisons between the events in London and our own world class athletes at dog shows across the country. American swimmer Michael Phelps (you do know he owns an AKC-registered Bulldog, right?) already owns the single Olympic medals record with eight gold medals in the 2008 Olympics. Yesterday he collected his 17th career medal (silver), putting him one shy of the 18 won by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina over three Olympics. Back in April, 2011’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, won his 107th career BIS to become the “winningest” Cocker Spaniel in AKC history. Yesterday Beckham and handler Michael Pitts collected their 118th big rosette to become the top winning Sporting Dog of all time, besting the record set in 2009 by the Pointer, CH Cookieland Seasyde Hollyberry.

GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm

Beckham, the current Number Eight Dog All Breeds, was not the only one of our Top Ten to have a “gold medal” performance this weekend. Our Top Three all had BACK2BACK BIS wins. The Number One Dog, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, took home the top prizes at Thursday’s Bald Eagle Kennel Club of Williamsport & Friday’s Lackawanna Kennel Club shows in Bloomsburg, PA. The Number Two Dog, the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, grabbed 4,219 points and the BISs at Friday’s Spartanburg Kennel Club & Saturday’s Hendersonville Kennel Club show in Greenville, SC. The Number Three Dog, the Doberman Pinscher, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici, was in Waukesha, WI, to collect nearly 3,000 points and both of the Bests at the hometown kennel club’s two shows.

GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari

Additional Top Ten Dogs taking home the “gold” were the Number Five Dog, the Affenpinscher, GCH CH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, who was top dog at Sunday’s Greenville Kennel Club show in South Carolina; the Number Six Dog, the Kuvasz, GCH CH Szumeria’s Wildwood Silver Six Pence, BIS at Sunday’s Longview Kennel Club show in that Texas town; and the Number Ten Dog, the American Foxhound, GCH CH Kiarry’s Pandora’s Box, also in Bloomsburg, was the Best In Show winner on Saturday at the Lakawanna Kennel Club’s second show.

There is one difference between the Olympic athletes and our canine competitors. All our AKC dogs are in a yearlong marathon. We are just at the midpoint of our race. Stay with us here on Best In Show Daily and on Dog Show Poop for the latest on where everybody is in the race. And that’s today’s Back Story.
