On the Road Again and a Favorite Whelping Book

Master Blogger Billy Wheeler is packing his bags for Kalamazoo, Mich. No, it’s not that he’s got a gal in the city made famous by Glenn Miller and his orchestra. Billy will be spending his Memorial Day weekend reporting ringside at the five all-breed shows of the West Michigan Apple Blossom Cluster. Learn what he’s looking forward to most as he prepares to head out on the road again.

Nothing can replace experience when it comes to whelping a litter of puppies – except perhaps a really good how-to book. Senior Editor Christi McDonald introduces readers to a modern classic that she values more than any other book on the subject. No matter how many litters she’s whelped, this practical guide continues to provide Christi with the reassurance all breeders welcome as the delivery date draws near.

Best In Show Daily will be bringing you results this holiday weekend from the Mission Circuit in Pomona, Calif., the West Michigan Apple Blossom Cluster in Kalamazoo, Mich., and the Atlantic Shore Memorial Classic in Freehold, N.J. Be sure to check in frequently for the latest from ringside.

On the Road Again
By Billy Wheeler
I am scrambling today, gathering my gear for my weeklong stay in Kalamazoo, MI. This will be my sixth consecutive month of visiting shows around the U.S., and I’m starting to get it right. I am packing lighter. I bought a new carry-on bag and a new computer bag for this trip. What is it about modern life that requires us to travel with more electronic gear than underwear?

It’s not that I object to all my electronic tethers to the world. Cyberspace has become my backyard fence. (You have to be over 50 to appreciate that reference.) I love being able to check in on friends around the country and around the world. more

My Favorite Things – Muriel Lee’s Whelping Book
By Christi McDonald
My mother was a great “midwife” when it came time to whelp Cairn puppies when I was growing up, and I’ve whelped a couple dozen litters of Toy Poodles myself since then. I was also fortunate to spend a number of years working for my vet at one time, so I know my way around birthing babies… baby puppies, anyway.

I’ve seen a lot of the different things that can go right and not just a few of the things that can go wrong. Still, all those litters have been over several decades. It’s not something I do on a monthly basis, or even on a yearly basis necessarily, so when it gets near time for another litter to come along I’ve always liked to give myself a littler refresher course. more
