Pasadena, CA to Consider Breed-Specific Mandatory Spay/Neuter, MONDAY JANUARY 27th!!

AKC Government Relations has just learned that the Pasadena City Council will hold a first reading of a breed-specific mandatory spay/neuter ordinance Monday, January 27th. The proposal will require the sterilization of “pit bulls,” defined as “Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American pit bull terriers, American Stafford Terriers or any mixed breed of dog which contains as an element of its breeding any of these breeds, unless they qualify for one of the narrow exemptions.” It is imperative that concerned residents and responsible dog owners attend this meeting and highlight the ineffectiveness of breed-specific legislation. Scroll down for meeting and contact information.

Dogs that have medical conditions which prohibit sterilization, are currently being used as a service or law enforcement dogs, or who qualify as a “show dog” are exempt from this ordinance. To take advantage of the show dog exemption one of the following must apply:

  • • The “pit bull” has competed in at least one show or sporting competition sanctioned by a national registry or approved by the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA within the last 365 days; or
  • • The “pit bull” has earned a conformation, obedience, agility, carting, herding, protection, rally, sporting, working, or other title from a dog registry or dog sport association or Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA; or
  • • The owner or custodian of the “pit bull” is a member of a Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA approved purebred dog breed club which maintains and enforces a code of ethics for dog breeding that includes restrictions from breeding dogs with genetic defects and life threatening health problems that commonly threaten the breed.
