Shape, Words and Your Dogs, plus Fresh Faces for 2013

Does your dog differentiate between his toys based on their shapes? Researchers in Lincoln, England, have conducted a study with a Border Collie named Gable, as Editor Susan Chaney writes, that’s led them to believe that dogs associate words with specific objects based on the objects’ size and texture, but not likely their shape. Learn how the Border Collie who knows the names of at least 43 of his toys helped them reach this conclusion.

Blogger-in-Chief Billy Wheeler reports today on a few of the dogs that are relatively new to the winners’ circle this year that have triggered his radar as potential contenders for top spots in the 2013 rankings. Find out where these fresh faces are and who is associated with them in today’s Back Story.
