Poetry in Motion – The Assistant’s Life

Working as an assistant to a professional handler means more than just going to the shows and “hanging out.” In DFR, Kayla Bertagnolli reminds Best In Show Daily readers that it’s a full-time, adrenaline-charged job that can consume a person mentally, physically, and emotionally. Although the days are long, and the work nearly endless, the life of an assistant is filled with personal victories and relationships that last a lifetime. In My Favorite Things, I’ll tell you about a little book of poems that celebrates the profound devotion to dogs that people have shared through good times and bad.

Being an assistant to a professional handler means more than just going to the shows and “hanging out.” It’s a full-time, adrenaline-charged job that can consume a person mentally, physically and emotionally.

But what does the word “assistant” actually mean? Well, according to the dictionary an assistant is a person who ranks below a senior person, and a person who helps in particular work. So in reality, an assistant is not just someone who helps or works for a handler. In fact, I think I’ve personally been an “assistant” since I was about 8 years old. Thank you, Mom! more

Best In Show DailyMy Favorite Things: Pet Poetrye
By Dan Sayers

Your Dog and My Dog is a charming little book filled with poems about our favorite canine companions. Published in 1935 by the Reilly & Lee Co. of Chicago, the collection of works was assembled by Tony Wons, a popular radio personality of the day.

Known as “scrapbookman,” Wons collected written works by many great writers, including Whitman and Shelley. He shared his acquisitions with his many listeners through the Tony Wons Scrapbook, a radio show that bolstered record-setting book sales.

Depression era fans must surely have found comfort through the retelling of his collection of stories honoring man’s best friend. more
