Pointing the Way and a Favorite Whelping Room

In The Back Story, Master Blogger Billy Wheeler makes a point to review a pair of recently held National Specialties. The Pointer and German Shorthaired Pointer Nationals were held last month, and today Billy brings you results and more. Find out the name of the young Pointer that scored points with judge Denys Janssen in Sacramento, and discover the veteran Shorthair that took a short cut to the head of judge Suzanne Dillin’s lineup in Phoenix.

When it comes to whelping a litter, nothing can replace planning and preparation – except maybe a vet who makes house calls. When my Irish Water Spaniel delivered her first litter last year, my friend and co-breeder supplied me with a to-do list and plenty of equipment. Find out how I turned my office into a whelping room and discover how a two level approach to day care proved to be a surprisingly effortless way to socialize an entire litter.

Go To A National
By Billy Wheeler
We started Dog Show Poop doing a few show reports on the nation’s Top Ten Dogs. Since then we have evolved to the point where we provide a show report on every AKC all breed show (OK, we do occasionally miss a show in Puerto Rico or Hawaii). More recently we have tried covering National Specialties. We started reporting on Parent Club National Specialties because we think they are the essence of who we are as dog folk.

As much publicity as we give the Westminster Kennel Club Best In Show or the AKC/Eukanuba National Champion, the rules of the focus of the dog game is on the Best of Breed. more

My Favorite Things – the Carefree Whelping Room
By Dan Sayers
When my Irish Water Spaniel bitch came in season last summer, I decided to breed her for the first time. She was 5 years old and in great shape, and I felt that if she was ever going to contribute to the gene pool in a lasting way, the time had come.

While the search for a stud dog got underway, I made an appointment with my vet and scheduled time at a few clinics to have ‘Kurre’ screened for the health issues most commonly encountered in her breed. more
