Project Shar-Pei, plus Halloween Hounds

Among the cable television programs I like to watch is “Project Runway,” hosted by Heidi Klum. Now in its 10th season, the popular reality show features fashion designers competing for a chance to debut collections at Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week. Learn how the show has taught me to appreciate the Chinese Shar-Pei’s baggy trousers, while it’s done nothing whatsoever to improve my own fashion sense.

Blogger-in-Chief Billy Wheeler is a serious journalist when it comes to reporting on the competitive world of AKC conformation shows. But in today’s Back Story, our experienced numbers cruncher is turning his attention in a less fervid direction. Find out what Billy has to say about the Halloween tradition of dressing our pets in costume.

And while we’re on the subject of doggie costumes, Best In Show Daily’s First Annual Halloween Pumpkin Carving and Costume Contest is happening right now. You’re invited to join in the fun by carving a dog-themed jack-o-lantern or dressing up your pup in a cute or creepy costume for the world to see. The contest ends November 1st, so there’s still time to submit your photos and win a delicious prize. Find out all the details at

Halloween is America’s third favorite holiday, just behind Christmas and Thanksgiving. All Hallows’ Eve has evolved into one of the most fun, and most diversely celebrated, holidays on the calendar. However, I will remember with the most fondness the Halloween celebrations we had when our two children were small…my son as Luke Skywalker and my daughter as Disney’s Belle of "Beauty and the Beast." more

When it comes to television viewing, I must admit to a few indulgences.

The Weather Channel’s “Storm Stories” and “Full Force Nature” always get my attention. I enjoy watching the History Channel’s “Ice Road Truckers” and the Smithsonian Channel’s “Aerial America” too. I find these shows interesting, I think, because of their emphasis on two of my favorite subjects: history and the natural world. more
