Rare Breeds Need Small Breeders

As an Irish Water Spaniel breeder, nothing could be more important than ensuring the continuation of our rare breeds. Only a small group of dedicated supporters stands between the continuation of these dogs and their extinction. Now the threat is even greater as a result of proposed regulations by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Restrictions imposed by the USDA on responsible small-scale breeding will have a direct impact on our ability to protect and preserve our most vulnerable breeds. Please act now by signing the AKC’s petition and by sharing your comments directly with the USDA/APHIS. Nothing less than the future of our breeds is at stake.

Dan Sayers started “in dogs” through a chance encounter with a Springer Spaniel in 1980. A student of dogs ever since, he’s shown Spaniels and Hounds in the conformation ring and breeds Irish Water Spaniels under the Quiet Storm prefix. A dog lover with a passion for the creative arts, Dan has worked as a freelance writer, photographer and illustrator for many years. His feature articles and columns have appeared in Dogs in Review, Dog World and the AKC Gazette, and his design work has appeared in dozens of publications in North America and abroad. An interest in all things “dog” brought Dan to Best In Show Daily, where he gets to work with the most dynamic group of fanciers every day. He lives in Merchantville, New Jersey, with his partner, Rudy Raya, Irish Water Spaniel, Kurre, and the memory of Oscar, a once-in-a-lifetime Sussex Spaniel.

Get your breed club to write a letter to APHIS, pointing that out. Ours did (Finnish Spitz). Don’t know how much good it will do, but if we of the rarer breeds speak up in the same voice, it sure can’t hurt.
