Release the Hounds…& the Herding Dogs

AKC's Number One Hound, GCH CH Kiarry's Pandora's Box

You may have noticed that I have been bemoaning the fact that there seems to be a paucity of Hounds and Herding dogs at the top of our rankings this year, but have you noticed what’s been going on so far this week? Of the 15 shows that have reported in so far this week, eight have been won by a Hound or Herding dog.

It all started on Thursday when the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, GCH CH Coventry’s Allure at Wyndstar, picked up the BIS at the Burbank Kennel Club opener in City of Industry, CA. Allie was followed by the Afghan Hound, GCH CH Thaon’s Mowgli, who took home the BKC’s day two title yesterday. They’re on day three in Terre Haute, IN, and the Harrier, GCH CH Downhome Hitech Innovator, has already put two BIS trophies in the motor home, winning both the Bloomington Indiana Kennel Club’s opener on Friday and the day two show of the Terre Haute Kennel Club today.

The country’s Number One Hound scored the week’s biggest payday, winning today’s Old Dominion Kennel Club of Virginia show with almost 2,600 entries. Up in New England, it was a first-time winner, the Belgian Tervuren, GCH CH Mishaook Lulu At Chateau Blanc HSCs, impressing BIS judge Arlene Benko at today’s Pioneer Valley Kennel Club show in West Springfield, MA. Also scoring today were the Saluki, GCH CH Aurora’s The Song and Dance Man, at the North Arkansas Kennel Club, and the Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Rocheuses Me and My Shadow of Cornus.

After three months of Sporting and Working dogs dominating the show rings and the ratings, it looks as if the other groups are starting to come alive. As I have noted, this seems to be one of the most competitive years in recent memory. And that’s today’s Back Story.

Update 5:34 p.m., PDT. This just in: the Saluki, GCH CH Jamora Mystic Topaz JC, was Del Richards’ BIS at today’s Chief Solano KC in Vallejo, CA.
