Terrier Sandwich or Non-Sporting First Course

I-5 by Cole Case

As we roll toward the mid-point of the show season and the first day of summer, we have more and more opportunities to attend an AKC show.

For those seeking a maximum number of dog shows, it’s hard to beat the six-show trek across Idaho that began yesterday in Filer with the day one show of the Snake River Canyon Kennel Club of Idaho. After today’s SRCKCI show, exhibitors will pack up and motor on over to Blackfoot for four days with the Pocatello Kennel Club and the Eagle Rock Kennel Club.

Idaho isn’t the only place to get a multiple-show fix this week. In the East, head for Dunkirk, NY, on the shores of Lake Erie, for four days with the Olean Kennel Club & the Conewango Valley Kennel Club. In the West, jump on I-5 and head to Hanford, CA, for two from the Sequoia Kennel Club followed by two with the Kings Kennel Club of California.

If you don’t have that much free time, or stamina, try a three-day weekend in New England with the North Shore Kennel Club & the Middlesex County Kennel Club in Topsfield, MA, or in Traverse City, MI, with the hometown kennel club. If you are in the mood for a Terrier sandwich, try the Little Fort Kennel Club of Waukegan Friday-Sunday all-breed shows wrapped around the Great Lakes All Terrier Association’s Saturday limited-breed offering. If you’re a Non-Sporting enthusiast, visit the Purina Farms complex in Gray Summit, MO, for a Friday first course with the Gateway Non-Sporting Dog Club show and stay over for the Rolla Missouri Kennel Club’s two all-breeds shows.

There are plenty of traditional two-day offerings available, six in all. Along the eastern seaboard, choose among the Bryn Mawr Kennel Club’s two shows in Ludwigs Corner, PA; the Western Carolina Dog Fanciers Association’s weekend in Waynesville, NC; and the St Petersburg Dog Fanciers Association show in Palmetto, FL. In the Midwest, opt for two in Troy, OH, with the Echo Hills Kennel Club of Ohio or two with the Fort Dodge Kennel Club in that Iowa town. Finally, if you live near the Mexican border in California or Arizona, check out the action in Chula Vista, CA, courtesy of the Bahia Sur Kennel Club of Chula Vista.

That’s 38 chances at some exciting all-breed competition, the kind you can see every weekend at an AKC dog show. And that’s today’s Back Story.
