The Buzz About Crufts – Day Three

Two more dogs have been selected to advance towards tonight’s finale at the NEC in Birmingham, England. Best In Show Daily brings you news that the Newfoundland Int. Sk. Pol. Cro. Hung. Dk. Cz. Au. Ch. King of Helluland Feel the Win was feeling victorious after winning the Working Group under Mr. Jeff Luscott. And it’s no secret that the Old English Sheepdog Ch. Bottomshaker My Secret was the top-to-bottom favorite of Pastoral Group judge Mr. Albert Wight. Stay tuned to learn if either will be chosen the 2012 Best in Show winner.

In today’s Breeder Buzzwords, an ancient dog with deep roots and even deeper wrinkles is featured for its unusual qualities and international appeal.

While Day Three at the world’s largest dog show showcased the Pastoral (Herding) and Working breeds, the topic on everyone’s lips continued to be the Kennel Club’s High Profile Breed list, and the elimination of certain specimens from Group participation.

Conjecture and rumor have run riot, and it has become increasingly difficult to separate fact from fantasy. Certainly—to to my mind, at least—one of the more unfortunate spin-offs from this gutter brawl between contestants and committees is the fact that a goodly amount of positive attention is being drawn away from the Best of Breed dogs who do go forward. more

Breeders of purebred dogs speak a language all their own. Wherever they gather, at dog shows, seminars or in chat rooms, words and phrases are used that have very narrow definitions. Their usage makes it difficult for a novice to fully participate in the conversation, and all but impossible for the general public to follow along.

Much of the breeder’s language is derived from domesticated livestock or veterinary science. Veterans who’ve spent a lifetime perfecting their own family of purebreds use agricultural and medical terms with confidence. When noted breed authorities get together, the dialog that results can effortlessly span the broadest topics, although the words spoken will often have the narrowest of definitions. more
