The Top Best-In-Show-Winning Hound of All Time

Editor’s note: Determining the top AKC winners in any category is an inexact science. We explain why in a companion article: Biggest BIS Winner Tough To Call.

Only one Hound has ever won more than 100 all-breed Best in Shows – the Number 1 dog among all breeds in 1995, CH Tryst of Grandeur, won 161 Best in Show awards in her career. Her sire, CH Triumph of Grandeur, is the top BIS-winning male Hound of all time with 86 awards.

Grandeur Afghan Hounds was founded in the 1940s by Sunny Shay. In 1955 CH Shirkhan of Grandeur finished his championship in one month with four majors and four Best of Breed wins from the classes. The following year, Shirkhan became the first Afghan to go Best in Show at Westminster, breeder/owner-handled by Shay, and he finished the year as Number 1 Afghan Hound. Forty years later, Tryst, carrying more than 20 crosses back to Shirkhan, won the Group at the Garden on her way to becoming the top Best-In-Show-winning Hound of all time.

Grandeur Afghan Hounds has produced many top Afghans. In the mid-1970s, a gentleman from New York named Roger Rechler purchased his first Afghan from Shay, and the long and successful alliance between the two on behalf of Grandeur began. In 1977 Michael Canalizo joined the Grandeur family when he began handling for Shay and Rechler. Regrettably Shay passed away just a year later when she was showing CH Boy Blu of Grandeur. But Grandeur lived on, and through careful line breeding and conscientious conditioning and campaigning, Rechler and Canalizo created a legacy in Afghans the likes of which has seldom been seen in any breed.

Tryst, always handled by Canalizo, was owned by Rechler and his sons Gregg, Scott and Todd. She was bred by Rechler and Susan Sprung.

Christi McDonald is a second-generation dog person, raised with a kennel full of Cairn Terriers. After more than a decade as a professional handler’s apprentice and handling professionally on her own, primarily Poodles and Cairns, she landed a fortuitous position in advertising sales with the monthly all-breed magazine ShowSight. This led to an 11-year run at Dogs in Review, where she wore several hats, including advertising sales rep, ad sales manager and, finally, editor for five years. Christi is proud to be part of the editorial team for the cutting-edge Best In Show Daily. She lives in Apex, N.C., with two homebred black Toy Poodles, the last of her Foxfire line, and a Norwich Terrier.
