The Top Best-in-Show-Winning Toy of All Time

By Christi McDonald

Editor’s note: Determining the top AKC winners in any category is an inexact science. We explain why in a companion article: “Biggest BIS Winner Tough to Call.”

For many, many years, the Best in Show record in the Toy Group was held by the legendary Pekingese Ch. Chik T’Sun of Caversham, shown to 126 BIS wins in the 1950s and early 1960s by the equally legendary handler Clara Alford.

But in recent years another individual has rightfully become a modern legend in the Pekingese world: David Fitzpatrick, professional handler and himself a Peke breeder, has won the Pekingese Club of America more than 20 times, has won five Toy Groups at Westminster, and has handled numerous Pekingese to Top Toy in the U.S.

‘Jeffrey,’ Eng. Am. Ch. Yakee If Only.

In 2005 David showed Eng. Am. Ch. Yakee If Only to Top Dog of all breeds in the U.S. by defeating more dogs in one year than any Toy dog in history ever had. He went on to win 128 all-breed BIS to become the all-time top Best-in-Show-winning Toy.

Jeffrey’s sire, Eng. Ch. Yakee A Dangerous Liaison

Born in January 2002, ‘Jeffrey’ was bred in Scotland by Bert Easdon and Philip Martin, and owned by Kit Woodruff. As with many top dogs, Jeffrey comes from illustrious stock: his sire, Eng. Ch. Yakee A Dangerous Liaison, was Best in Show at the world famous Crufts dog show in 2003.

Jeffrey’s great-grandsire, Eng. Ch. Yakee For Your Eyes Only

His double-great-grandsire, Eng. Ch. Yakee For Your Eyes Only, was Reserve Best in Show at Crufts in 1989. Among his many prestigious wins, Jeffrey was Group First at Westminster in 2005 and was a two-time national specialty winner. He is also a PCA Register of Merit sire.

Christi McDonald is a second-generation dog person, raised with a kennel full of Cairn Terriers. After more than a decade as a professional handler’s apprentice and handling professionally on her own, primarily Poodles and Cairns, she landed a fortuitous position in advertising sales with the monthly all-breed magazine ShowSight. This led to an 11-year run at Dogs in Review, where she wore several hats, including advertising sales rep, ad sales manager and, finally, editor for five years. Christi is proud to be part of the editorial team for the cutting-edge Best In Show Daily. She lives in Apex, N.C., with two homebred black Toy Poodles, the last of her Foxfire line, and a Norwich Terrier.

David is one of the best people in our doggie world, and his Pekes are the best of the best in the Breed. Thank you for the nice story!

Great story of some excellent individual feats by both canine and human species. It was the great Ch. Chik T’Sun of Caversham that topped Ch. Bangaway of Sirrah Crest from his at the time record of 121 AB BIS awards. Again, an incredible feat in that era compared to this modern climate of an available show in every direction at will !
