I have had the happy circumstance in my life of stumbling across extraordinary talent. Among my favorite experiences have been seeing “Evita” on the road in San Francisco with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin before they and the show won Tonys on Broadway; seeing Bette Midler perform at the Concord (CA) Pavilion the month before her Oscar-nominated movie, “The Rose,” premiered, and seeing tenor Rolando Villazon in a super tiny concert hall in Atlanta six months before his Metropolitan Opera debut. This is one of those weekends at the shows I live for. While I spend many hours a week following our Top 100 dogs, this weekend, from coast to coast, I’ve been treated to Best in Show performances by dogs not yet in our exalted 100.
Yesterday in Topsfield, MA, a Standard Poodle, Ale Kai Solo on Fifth, came from the classes to take the BIS at the Northshore Kennel Club show. Once you look at the pedigree and note that the elegant 14-month-old bitch’s breeders/owners are Karen LeFrak and Wendell Sammet, surprise becomes anticipation. Today`s winner in Topsfield was a Maltese, GCH CH Ta-Jon’s Pawstively Pawparazzi. I saw the 2-year-old in the classes back in March in Louisville and am pleased to see promise fulfilled.
I remarked yesterday that there are breeds that seem to produce extraordinary competition year after year. As evidence of that look no further than the two Whippets taking home big rosettes so far this weekend. Yesterday in Dunkirk, NY, GCH CH Karasar’s Remembrence, picked up her fourth all-breed best of the year and a place on the Dog Show Poop DOGS2WATCH list. Today in Fort Dodge, IA, the 16-month-old bitch, CH Starline’s Oxford Victim of Love, picked up her second BIS this year, both of which came in the last 30 days.
Other new faces taking BIS this weekend were the Pointer, CH Seasyde Edgehill Heart Of Gold, Michele Billings’ BIS in Texarkana, AR, today; the Japanese Chin, GCH CH Victory Spencer, winner today in Chula Vista, CA; and the Spinoni Italiano, GCH CH Darby Canyon Mick Jagger, Best in Show today in Blackfoot, ID.
Not that our Top Dogs are going without…the Number One Dog all breeds, the German Wirehaired Pointer, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm, has already collected three BIS this week, while the Number Two Dog, the English Springer Spaniel, GCH CH Wynmoor Champagne Supernova, has also picked up a big rosette in Blackfoot. Our Number Seven Dog, the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH CH AfterAll Painting the Sky, has added a BIS to her 2012 resume in Grayslake, IL, and our Number Eight Dog, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, picked up BACK2BACK BIS and his 113th career Best in Traverse City, MI.
Remember, when you’re out at your local show, you never know when you are going to happen upon something extraordinary. And that’s today’s Back Story.
