Upset or a Glimpse of Greatness?

North Well Chako Jp Speed Change

I hope you followed my rule not to bet the lunch money on a dog show. For if you did bet on the outcome of yesterday’s Inverness Florida Kennel Club in Brooksville, Fla., you are likely brown-bagging it today.

While the eventual BIS winner was the 2011 Number Seven Dog All Breeds, the Whippet, GCH CH Starline’s Chanel, other top ranked dogs from last year did not fare as well. The past year’s Number One Dog, the Black Cocker Spaniel, GCH CH Casablanca’s Thrilling Seduction, failed to get a ribbon in yesterday’s Sporting Group, only the second time that has occurred in the last year.

The Miniature Pinscher, GCH CH Marlex Classic Red Glare, finished 2011 as the Number One Miniature Pinscher, the Number Three Toy Dog, & the Number 12 Dog All Breeds, and has already scored one BIS on the Florida Marathon, but yesterday she was walked out of the Toy Group, won by a Toy Poodle from the Open Dog class, North Well Chako Jp Speed Change. Having seen the Poodle last month in Orlando, I am not surprised that the almost5-year-old surprised the better known dogs.

The big winner at December’s AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in Orlando was the Standard Poodle, GCH CH Jaset’s Satisfaction. However, 2011’s Number Six Dog All Breeds, didn’t make it into the Non-Sporting Group’s top four, which included a 10-month-old Chow Chow, Milin’s Emerson Tappin On The Bay, from the 9-12 Puppy Dog class.   Having seen London and handler Ann Rairigh several times this past year, I have to say that must be some Chow puppy.

Now, I was not at this show. However, my on site contacts were all surprised so many big names failed to place in the Groups. Nonetheless, they all agreed that the competition was very tough. It’s this element of surprise that keeps me going to dog shows. I love the moment when an unknown dog presents himself and goes to the head of the line, sending everyone in the gallery scrambling for their catalogs, asking, “Who is that?” I know that I first noticed 2010’s Number One Dog All Breeds, the Smooth Fox Terrier, J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, when on the 2009 Florida Marathon he bested the Sealyham Terrier, CH Efbe’s Hidalgo At Goodspice, winner of the Montgomery County Kennel Club show, the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, Crufts, & the FCI World Dog Show.

The question of the day is, “Did we only witness upsets in Florida or did we see this year’s crop of top dogs?” and that’s today’s Back Story.
