Westminster 2013 – Day Two

Billy's Schedule Tuesday

Yesterday was exciting and hectic here at Piers 92/94 on the Hudson River at 55th St in Manhattan. Spectators and exhibitors scrambled from one pier to the next, transiting on two giant elevators. The Westminster crew did a masterful job of keeping the traffic flowing, but it did present problems for those wanting to see breeds on both piers.

We had our share of upsets last night. Not one of my picks made it through to the Herding Group, the first Group in decades to be won by a class dog, the 20-month-old English Sheepdog, Bugaboo Picture Perfect, breeder/owner-handled by Colton Johnson. Ironically, Colton’s wife, Heather, who won the Herding Group at Eukanuba with her Bouvier des Flandres, GCH CH Rocheuses Me and My Shadow of Cornus, had lost in the Bouvier ring earlier in the day.

This morning I will stay on Pier 92 with my beloved Terriers and then make my way to Pier 94 for some of the Working and Herding Dogs. This morning I’m starting at judge Gary Vlachos’ ring to watch his nine Norfolk Terriers and his 12 Bedlington Terriers.

His Best Norfolk was GCH Yarrow Venerie Ticket To Ride and his Best Bedlington was GCH Lamz Eleanor Rigby.

One of the most anticipated rings this year is David Alexander’s Russell Terrier ring.  Spectators and fanciers line up four deep around the ring to see his 13 entries. There was an approving roar from the crowd when he selected the only Russell to win a BIS since the breed’s recognition, GCH CH Goldsands Columbus.

Westminster 2013 Lakeland Terriers

There were but four Lakeland Terriers in Merle Taylor’s ring, all of outstanding quality.  His Best was 2012’s Number One Lakeland and Number Three Terrier, GCH CH Larkspur Acadia Save Me A Spot.  The Lakelands were followed by two Sealyham Terriers, CH Efbe’s Thunder Rd At Burberry and GCH CH Hotshot’s Royal She’ll Make ‘Em Cry, with the former taking the BOB.

I then made my way over to Pier 94 for the remainder of the day.  I managed to get to James Hubbard’s ring where he had just mad his final cut on his 25 English Setters.  When he was done he had selected GCH CH Stargaz’R ‘N Wingfield Time Will Tell as his Best of Breed.  I ended the day with Charles Olvis and his 20 Doberman Pinschers.   The gallery was full of knowledgeable  dog people who were treated to a marvelous display of showmanship from a beautiful collection of dogs.  At the end it was 2012’s Number One Working dog, GCH CH Protocol’s Veni Vidi Vici.
