Westminster Warm-Ups

While every dog lover knows that the Westminster Kennel Club show will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York next month, most do not know that there are several warm-up events of note in the days before the main event. Two limited breed shows and 57 breed specialties are scattered over the New York metropolitan area starting on Friday, February 10. These shows are concentrated in two areas, at the Westminster Kennel Club’s official show hotel, the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from the Garden and the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ.

The fun begins with the premier all Toy Dog limited breed show of the year, the Progressive Dog Club show. There are 497 Toy Dogs entered at this year’s event at the Hotel Pennsylvania. On Saturday the Yorkshire Terriers will head to Eight Avenue and the New Yorker Hotel for two specialties on Saturday with the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America & the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater New York. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Chinese Crested, Havanese, Papillons, Pekingese, Pugs, & Shi Tzu will all have additional specialties over the next two days at the Hotel Pennsylvania. Also at the same venue are the Boston Terrier Club of New York’s two shows and the French Bulldog Club of America’s two shows on Saturday & Sunday. The Hound Group will make an appearance at the hotel on the 12th when the Knickerbocker Dachshund Club hold its show.

Westminster Warm Up Sites

There will also be Dachshunds & Pugs at the other major pre-Westminster locale, the Meadowlands, where the Dachshund Club of New Jersey will hold their specialty on Friday and the Delaware Valley Pug Club will join the crowd on Saturday. The Dachshunds & Pugs will be joined by German Shorthaired Pointers, English, Irish & Irish Red and White Setters, Cocker Spaniels, Vizlas, Afghan Hounds, Petit Bassets Griffon Vendeen, Salukis, Black Russian Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, and Bichon Frise. All the Terriers will be there on Sunday for the Garden State All Terrier Club show.

But, wait…there’s more. The Long Island Golden Retriever Club will be out on The Island in Bay Shore, NY for the weekend while the Long Island Bulldog Club will join the Bulldog Club of America in Edison, NJ. Finally, there will be an Afghan Hound Specialty on Saturday and four Collie specialties over the weekend in Bristol, CT. You would think that all these clubs would get together and find a single venue to maximize entries, but that’s a subject for another column. And that’s today’s Back Story.
