Woofstock Watch Day Two

June 7, 2013

GCH CH Mountain View National Acclaim

GCH CH Mountain View National Acclaim

Mark Twain said something like, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Bay Area, microclimates abound. When the Department of Energy did its solar power feasibility study of San Francisco, they found seven microclimates in the 48-square-mile city.

This morning the fog envelops the city and has cooled the Woofstock show site here in Vallejo to a brisk 56 degrees. However, we are expecting the midday sun to burn off the fog and give us temperatures in the mid-80s by noon. (Just eight miles away, where my hotel is, the thermometer will get close to the century mark.

To this dog show junkie, the cool temps give me the opportunity to sit at judge Lisa Warren’s outdoor ring. First up are her seven Weimaraners, including four specials. The one she found extra special was GCH CH Simpatico Equal Justice.

Next up for judge Warren were nine Cane Corso. Just last week, GCH CH Liberty’s Armed and Dangerous became the first Cane Corso to win an AKC BIS. Today’s breed winner was the group-winning GCH CH Lionheart’s La Nostra Stella Brillante.

The Cane Corso were followed by seven Akitas. Best Of Breed went to CH Hyojun’s Everbody’s Talking in the hotly contested breed.

We’re back to Sporting Dogs with a very healthy entry of 10 German Wirehaired Pointers. The one judge Warren found appealing was GCH CH Mountain View National Acclaim.

Even more impressive than 10 GWPs are 12 Flat-Coated Retrievers. Last week here in California, a Flat Coat took his first every BIS over the country’s Number One Dog. That dog was here today, but it was another who took the breed, GCH CH Wind Dancer’s Kick A Little.

10:00 AM

I don’t need to tell you that California is Chihuahua crazy, whether it’s Paris Hilton or Mickey Rourke, everyone here loves the little guys. Tim Robbins drew an entry of 30 Long Coat and 12 Smooth Coat. Leading the Long Coats was GCH CH Whiteclouds Miss Kitty. Topping the Smooths was GCH CH Super CJ of Golden Side.

11:00 AM

I have been neglecting my Terriers, but now that the sun is beating down, judge Darlene Heck’s indoor ring is looking mighty attractive. First up are her 14 West Highland White Terriers. Taking the breed was GCH CH Wyndbrae’s Maclaren.

Miniature Schnauzers are so popular here in California that author Joseph Wambaugh made one a dognapping victim in his sendup of the dog world, “The Black Pearl.” The plot centers on a down-on-his-luck handler who kidnaps a top-winning Schnauzer and holds her for ransom. The top-winning Schnauzer judge Heck found today was GCH CH Allaruth Just Kidding of Sole Baye.
