World Dog Show Begins and an Apple Blossom Preview

The World Dog Show begins today in Salzburg, Austria, and Senior Editor Christi McDonald introduces Best In Show Daily readers to some of the many events that will be taking place over the next three days. More than 18,000 dogs from 55 countries have made their way to the city where Mozart was born and “The Sound of Music” was filmed. This time around, however, the hills are alive with the sound of barking!

Master Blogger Billy Wheeler will be heading to Kalamazoo, Mich., next week to take a bite out of the West Michigan Apple Blossom cluster of dog shows. Today he’s taking a look at the judging panels and entry breakdowns at the five all-breed shows that will welcome some of the country’s top dog-and-handler teams.

Best In Show Daily welcomes news and information from breed specialists. We invite you to share your knowledge with our readers – among the most active participants in the dog game. The 2012 World Show – Austria
By Christi McDonald
Each year the Fédération Cynologique Internationale sponsors the World Dog Show in a different country. In 2011 the location was Paris, and in 2012 it moves to Salzburg, Austria. The enormous event started today at the Salzburg Exhibition Centre and continues through Sunday, May 20. It is sponsored by the Austrian Kennel Club..

Austria is a familiar venue for the World Dog Show, as it has been held there three times: in 1976 in Innsbruck, in 1986 in Tulin and in 1996 in Vienna. This year World Show officials have prepared for the entry of 18,607 dogs from 55 different countries. more

Kalamazoo Judges, Entries and More
By Billy Wheeler
This year I am a making a point of visiting every part of these United States to see dogs I don’t normally see and talk with people I don’t normally hear from. Next week I will be in Kalamazoo, MI. for a five-day dog show extravaganza. The Apple Blossom Cluster starts next Thursday and runs through Monday, with the Pontiac Kennel Club, the Holland Michigan Kennel Club, the Grand Rapids Kennel Club, the Kalamazoo Kennel Club & the Greater Muskegon Kennel Club, all taking a turn hosting. I find this spirit of cooperation to be refreshing. I will reserve for a future post my opinion of clubs that perpetuate the “split venue” weekendmore
