World Dog Show: Day Two, plus the Dog World as Refuge

A single dog was chosen yesterday to represent Group 2 at this year’s World Dog Show. Nearly 50 different breeds competed in Budapest, Hungary, representing the Pinschers and Schanuzers, Molossers and Swiss Mountain Dogs. Meet the lucky winner that will advance to compete for Best in Show in contributing editor Karl Donvil’s latest report.

Blogger-in-Chief Billy Wheeler spent time in the Bay Area during the 1960s where once again fanciers will soon gather for the now infamous “Woofstock” show cluster. Things in the region have changed quite a bit since San Francisco was a hippie haven, but for Billy, the dog world has remained a kind of refuge through the years. Find out how a life in dogs has been good for one aging hippie.

Many of this year’s top show dogs are featured in their own beautiful mini-websites on Best In Show Daily. Simply click on a banner ad to see the dog’s up-to-date show history, plus a slide show of photos that reveals exactly why it’s a top dog.

Still Carrying a Torch for Grace Slick
By Billy Wheeler

Next month I will return to Northern California where I spent almost 30 years of my life. Both of my children were born in the San Francisco Bay area. My son, my daughter-in-law and my two granddaughters still live there, in Martinez, just across the river from Vallejo, the site of the four-show cluster known as “Woofstock.” The name of the cluster, hosted by the Lake County Kennel Club of Northern California and the Contra Costa Kennel Club, is taken from the 1969 music festival. Woodstock remains the most vivid image of the hippie era, an era that began in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district in 1967 during what is remembered as the Summer of Love. more

World Dog Show Day Two – Budapest, Hungary
By Karl Donvil

It was somewhat cloudy on the second day of the World Show, but no rain was to be expected. This is important, as at Hungexpo, the showground, the pavilions are not linked, and going from one hall to another means going outdoors. But so far, with the nice weather, this is the perfect place to be, cozy and with lots of stands with goods and food for sale. more
