Holland Michigan Kennel Club: Friday, May 25, 2012
Today I’m visiting the Holland Michigan Kennel Club on day two of the Apple Blossom Cluster in Kalamazoo, MI, and starting my day with my beloved Terriers. Virginia Latham Smith had eight Smooth Fox Terriers and 11 Parson Russell Terriers. One dog that did not make it to her ring was the Smooth Fox, J’Cobe Broxden Hampton Court Detroit Tiger, who was yesterday’s Terrier Group winner. Tiger is a repeat breeding of GCH CH J’Cobe Kemosabe Vigilante Justice, the winningest Smooth Fox of all time. Tiger was entered in the Bred By Exhibitor class and breeder/owner-handler Phil Booth was busy in the German Wirehaired Pointer ring with yesterday’s BIS winner, GCH CH Mt View’s Ripsnorter Silver Charm. The Smooth Fox that did get the breed was GCH CH Broxden Waybroke Simphuni’s Burlesque.
Next up were the Parsons, who have supported entries and two specialties over the five days of the cluster. Best went to 21-month-old bitch, CH Foxbend Call My Agent.
I’m on the north side of the Kalamazoo County Expo Center to visit Col. Joe Purkhiser’s Bullmastiff ring. There are 31 of the gamekeeper’s dogs entered today, and there will be twice that many tomorrow for the parent club’s specialty. His best Bullmastiff is GCH CH Newcastle’s Picturesqe Picasso. I’ll be back tomorrow to see more of this terrific breed.
I am making my first foray to the outdoor rings to see some of the Hound breeds. Canadian judge Guy Jeavons started with six Basset Hounds, including yesterday’s Hound Group winner, who repeated his breed win today.
Next up was a single Irish Wolfhound, GCH CH Desert Dune at Curiann, a BIS-winning, magnificent example of the breed.
Before lunch break, we were treated to 10 Ibizan Hounds, including one rarely seen wire coat, Davinci’s Machfive. Breed went to the 4-year-old bitch, GCH CH Harehill’s Working the Strip.
Judge Jeavons picked up after the lunch break with six Otterhounds, a real rarity these days. The one he chose as his BOB was GCH CH Aberdeen’s Under The Influence.
The Best of his seven Scottish Deerhounds was the 2-year-old bitch GCH CH Lehigh-Darkwynd Flora.
