I’m starting my day with judge Dr. Kenneth Levinson who has 20 15-inch Beagles and 30 Whippets. The gallery is packed here at the Beagle ring. Beagles are very popular in Texas. Those of us who remember Texan Lyndon Johnson’s presidency remember LBJ’s Beagles and an infamous photo op when the President pulled the ears of his Beagle, Him. I’m pretty sure today’s variety winner, CH Legacy Busch’s Bold and Brave, never had his ears pulled.

Whippets are one of the breeds in our sport that is very competitive. At almost every show I attend, there is always a Whippet contending for the Group or BIS. Today’s contender was CH Bretica Not To Be Forgotten.

I often recommend Dachshunds to first-time dog owners. They come in two sizes and three coats. As a Terrier guy, I particularly like the wirehairs. They have the best of the Dachshund with a little Terrier-tide thrown in. Today judge Dana Cline had 19 of the variety to choose from. His BOV was GCH CH Rivindell’s Hot Wire.

I have called the Standard Poodle the dog show cliche, explaining to the general public why we in the game see the Standard Poodle as the dog show icon. Every show season we have several Standards contending in the rankings. Today judge Houston Clark had 31 of big beauties from which to choose his Best. His BOV was the multi-BIS winning GCH CH Dawin Hearts on Fire.
