I was a football fan once, back when I lived in San Francisco during Joe Montana’s years with the 49ers. Now I only watch football occasionally–the games conflict with my dogs shows–, but like most of Americans I watch the Superbowl. While I find the game fun, I live for the commercials. I think the talent involved in putting together commercials that average $3.5M for a 30 second spot is amazing. The big ad firms have learned that most of the people watching the big game are dog owners. Click on the links below to see four of my favorite ads this year.

Last year’s fan favorite ad was a Doritos ad with a Pug pinning his tormentor beneath the patio door that separating him form a bag of Doritos. This year’s Doritos ad featured a Great Dane paying hush money–or is it “hush Doritos”?–to a human who knows how the family cat disappeared. Obviously Doritos thinks that dog lovers outnumber cat lovers.

From Volkswagen , we learned that dogs love to chase the new VW bug. When an overweight dog can no longer get through the doggie door to chase his preferred auto, he goes on an “Big Loser” like exercise routine to realize his dream of once again chasing the Beetle.

While the VW chasing dog is a mixed breed with obviously Golden Retriever antecedents, Skechers opted to put a French Bulldog in their latest running shoes–two pair–and pit him against racing Greyhounds. The Frenchie wins in a walk, a moon walk.

Hands down my favorite ads over the years have been the Bud Light commercials. This year a rescue dog named WeGo masters the recall command. Not only is this ad brilliant, it includes a plug for all rescue organizations. Any advertising writer that can convince Bud Light drinking football fans to get involved in rescue has my undying respect.
