Who let the Hounds out?
Karen Dewey let the Bloodhounds out for the past 23 years in the Lake Sunapee area of New Hampshire. Soonipi Hounds has produced 18 champions (eight of whom Karen finished herself) and many trailing, obedience and rally titled dogs. Her current pack of six hounds includes “Phoebe” Mulitiple BIS Ch. Soonipi Dancin in the Moonlite MLH and breeder/owner-handled “Garth” BIS GCh. Soonipi Friends in Low Places MLH. Showing Garth to his Ch. and GCh., winning multiple supported entries and Group placements, the Top Twenty at the American Bloodhound Club National Specialty in October 2012, and a recent Best in Show has Karen beaming these days. She believes the owner-handler must pay attention to the details in every way, from choosing the dog to show, deciding the shows to enter, and even taking the losses with the wins in stride. “A positive attitude and believing in your dog is essential,” Karen says. Her experiences have deepened her understanding of the sport and enriched her life through the many wonderful friends she has made along the way. Karen holds in high esteem other owner-handlers, including Jere Marder and Jocelyn Lundy, and encourages owners to “show your dog!” Garth finished 2012 ranked #4 All-Breed and tied for #3 Breed. Karen says she could not be more proud of Team Garth!
